This Mum Can- Young Mums Collective

When I first got involved with the Power To The Bump campaign, I wasn't too sure what I would end up doing beyond sharing my story. Following a whirlwind of TV appearances, interviews and even a day in parliament, I realised that I wanted to do more than just share my story. I wanted to help make a difference in any way possible.

Fortunately, during my day in parliament I was introduced to Joeli from the amazing website Pregnant Then Screwed. We've been trying to work out the best way to work together on a project aimed specifically at young mums. So along with a few other friends, Young Mums Collective was created.

Young Mums Collective aims to be a space where we can challenge and demand recognition for young mums. We wanted to create a space where young mums could feel empowered, could challenge stereotypes and build their self confidence and self worth whilst being informed about their rights. All of us that are part of the project have either been young mums or faced workplace discrimination due to being parents. So with the backing from EHRC and our drive to force a change we have created something we are all so proud of.

Knowing that young mums don't necessarily get the right support that they need when they are thinking about returning to work or education, we have put in place This Mum Can. This Mum Can is an online workshop that is aimed at mums under the age of 26 that are looking for that boost whilst either on maternity leave, or planning a return to work or education.

From addressing the issues you may face in the workplace, to finding your support network. This online course leaves you feeling motivated, empowered and reassured that you can achieve anything. With it being an online course, it means you can do it from the comfort of your home, on a mobile or computer and really feel part of a growing community. And the best part is? It's completely free.

As a young mum, I knew that I wanted to return to my studies, but I never really knew the best way to approach my course leaders. Similarly with work, I knew I was returning but I was unsure as to what I could ask for, what they could offer me. So this course would have been fantastic. In fact, when we trialled it, I sat there thinking "wow, this is still helping me now!".

Being a mum can be a scary time, especially when you are a young mum. Society is telling you all about the stereotypes of young mums, but nine times out of ten you won't fit into that mould. We have collected a range of videos from other young mums sharing their stories to show that you can achieve your dreams and you aren't alone.

If you know a young mum that could benefit from this workshop, or you are a young mum that needs that boost then please sign up. It's free and you will leave feeling empowered and confident because This Mum Can.

  1. I just signed up for the course! I definitely started my maternity leave feeling 'pregnant then screwed' so I'm hoping this can really help - thank you! xx

  2. What a fantastic initiative. When I was pregnant with my eldest my bosses discriminated against me because of it but I had no idea at the time how to tackle it. A resource like this would have given me a much needed confidence boost.

  3. What a great campaign and initiative. I think that more and more women are being discriminated against due to just having a womb! My old boss said he would never employ a woman of child baring age again after both me and my colleague were expecting at the same time!

  4. Oh that sounds really good! I wasn't a young mum (no matter what I might tell myself) but I was discriminated against at work - sadly that seems all too common.

  5. Sounds like a fantastic course. I wish something like this had been around when I had Abbey as I didn't have a clue what was around to help me when I had Abbey at 18

  6. I was a young Mum at 19 and wish there had been much more support like there is now back then.
