Mister Maker and the Shapes Live - Mayflower, Southampton

I love how kids theatre is growing into this fantastic array of shows. From famous faces gracing the stage to small groups putting on engaging performances. There is literally something for every family from newbies to seasoned veterans. We would class ourselves in the latter category, but we still get that thrill when we take our seats in a theatre.

We were recently invited to the Mayflower in Southampton to see Mister Maker and the Shapes Live! We honestly couldn't work out who was more excited, me or Max.

Based on the hit Cbeebies show, Mister Maker and the Shapes Live is a high energy stage show that follows a similar format to the one you watch on TV. Throughout the show you watch Mister Maker and his handy helpers create amazing makes live on stage. We honestly couldn't wait, and with a make of his own tucked in my bag Max was ready for anything.

At just over an hour and a half (including an interval) the show stands on the long side of family based shows, but Max absolutely loved it. Probably because he's performed in and seen full length musicals, but also because he is a child that is captivated by anything that graces a stage. The cast were fantastic and mingled in the audience before the performance to put kids at ease and encourage them to get stuck in.

I can honestly say it was so refreshing to watch a show that got the kids involved as much as they did. We've been to many a kids show where audience interaction was a minimum and there felt like a bit of divide. From dragging parents on stage, to getting kids to wave paper in the air. Each moment was cleverly thought out to keep kids as enthralled from the first minute to the last.

Max absolutely loved shouting along and dancing in the aisle, whilst parents were encouraged to take photos and capture memories of the show forever. Our favourite part was definitely the shapes taking to the stage. And I don't want to give too much away but my goodness, Rectangle can sing! It felt like we were at a party with Mister Maker and even the grumpy dads were moving and grooving at this Arty Party.

We've never been to a show where we have wanted to leave and make something that we have seen on stage. But since coming home we have invested in pipe cleaners, foam and lolly sticks to make some crafty bits that Mister Maker made himself. Everyone from babies through to grandparents loved each and every moment. Whatever he is doing on stage is magical and dare I say it, he's a Cbeebies national treasure.

Max was lucky to get a super special treat after the show, a meet and greet with the man himself. To see his face light up when he addressed Max without asking his name was a memory I won't ever forget. He was mighty impressed with Max's creation (and even signed it!) whilst asking Max all about what other shows he had seen. He even asked Mummy who her favourite Cbeebies character was and told me to get making too. I can honestly say he is one of the loveliest celebs we've ever met (and he's promised to drag daddy on stage next time we come, I mean he is coming to Bournemouth in October!).

Mister Maker and the Shapes are on tour for the rest of the year with tickets still available. It's honestly a show that all the family will love no matter the age. Thank you Mayflower, Southampton for the kind invitation.
