Max is like a sponge when it comes to learning new information. The more he can learn, the happier he is. And he loves the opportunity to get stuck in and try things out himself. It's why we love the Winchester Science Centre so much, there always seems something new to do and this summer is no different.
With a new area called Explorer: Space, it seemed the perfect reason to pop over for a visit and we took some friends with us to experience the day and become astronauts too!
Based just outside of Winchester, the Science Centre and Planetarium is a fantastic, interactive space for children and adults alike to learn about different aspects of science and technology. With lots of activities for kids to get stuck into, science shows to watch and the planetarium to watch fantastic film in, there is something for everyone to do.
The new Explorer: Space area is based downstairs and welcomes you to learn everything about space and the universe. With 20 modular exhibits, covering everything from space to the moon landing, kids will be excited to launch into this new area.
Max and his best mate couldn't wait to get stuck in, and we honestly lost them to this area for a good few hours as they just wanted to absorb everything and learn about everything they could. I love how they could take charge and explore this area themselves. With that bit of independence they seemed to enjoy the learning experience more!
Throughout summer, Winchester Science Centre are putting on interactive shows to spark kids imaginations. Learning about space stations and rockets, kids can find out fun facts and see some fantastic explosions. We had a talk from the fantastic Luke who really captured the kids imaginations and they loved getting involved.
Learning about what satellites were, where they fall in the atmosphere and how a rocket gets into space had the kids literally sitting on the edge of their seats (when they weren't helping of course). I was impressed that Luke took the time to answer all the kids questions and really seemed to engage well with them.
After having our fill of space, we took time for lunch (whilst the kids picked and ran around downstairs). It's worth noting that there is an indoor picnic area for people to enjoy their own food, and also a cafe on site too. There's plenty of facilities for everyone and even designated children's toilets too. As soon as you are in the centre, it's all self contained and you feel really secure knowing your kids can explore.
After lunch we decided to take a look at the rest of the centre and let the kids run a bit wild. It was great to see how they problem solved and really worked together to find out how to complete tasks and work out solutions.
Of course the kids were obsessed with the sports based activities and loved learning about wheelchair basketball, rowing and running. They helped build bricks with pulleys and levers, they programmed robots to walk around the tech area and learnt how diet can affect your body.
Whether they were learning about science, technology or even mind games, they didn't stop for even a moment when we at the Science Centre and as we drove home Max turned to me and said that learning had never been as fun as a day at the Winchester Science Centre. We can't wait to go back!
