The Best Christmas Shows in Dorset and Hampshire 2018

Heading to the theatre at Christmas is probably one of our favourite things about the season (apart from spending time with family!). But with so many shows on, it's hard to decide what one is best for you and your family. That's why I've comprised a handy list of some of my top picks for you to enjoy. I've covered both Hampshire and Dorset and included everything from pantomimes to plays and musicals to tempt everyone through the theatre doors.

Remember, if you're unsure of taking your child to the theatre, read my posts for Top Tips for the Theatre With Kids and Family Theatre - Why You Should Go.

I have to say that I may be slightly biased about this show as Max is in it this year. But I can also say that I've seen this show several times over the past few years and it's truly spectacular. With West End style staging and dancing, you will be truly transported as you sit and enjoy classic Christmas songs and a fantastic storyline that will entertain all ages.

Sleeping Beauty - Bournemouth Pavilion - 8th December - 6th January
It's double trouble at the Pavilion in Bournemouth when two stars take to the stage as the Evil Queen in this rendition of Sleeping Beauty. With a fantastic cast including Jennifer Ellison and Rita Simons, you will be full of glee when this traditional pantomime treads the boards.

Your Toys....... - Lighthouse Poole - 12th December - 24th December
I can honestly say that some of our best winter theatre trips have been to see shows in the Shearling Studio at the Lighthouse. These short shows are perfect for families including little ones looking to go to the theatre for the first time. All of the shows are full of interactive fun and Your Toys.... is no exception. At each show, the toy that you bring will form a part of the show and is all about friends coming together.

Dick Whittington - Lighthouse Poole - 7th December - 31st December
Join the fun as Dick Whittington and his cat travel from Poole to Olde London Town in search of fame and fortune. The Lighthouse always put on a fantastic pantomime and I can't wait to see Chris Jarvis take to the stage in the title role. We are looking forward to this magical performance and have already got our tickets!

Dick Whittington - Mayflower Theatre - 15th December - 6th January
This year's Mayflower pantomime is Dick Whittington. The tale of a young hero called Dick Whittington that wants to find fame and fortune in the great city. Of course he has some barriers and struggles on his way, can he outwit the King Rat and find the love of his life? With a star studded cast including Steve McFadden and Joe McElderry it's set to be a cracking one.

I'm super excited about this show. To be honest, I think that the shows aimed at children are normally the most magical at Christmas. This show is set around a girl called Emily who is slightly impatient for the big day to arrive, Eddie a little mouse that is watching decides to see what all the fuss is about when it comes to Christmas. Following his adventure in the run up to Christmas you discover some magical and wonderful things!

Peter Pan - New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth - 13th December - 31st December
Fly to Neverland in this perfect rendition of Peter Pan at the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth. Set in this intimate theatre, all the family will fall in love with this classic tale  of Peter and the Lost Boys as the fight the daring Captain Hook. We are hoping to squeeze in a visit if we get to pop down to Portsmouth over Christmas as I know it's going to be great.

Cinderella - Kings Theatre, Southsea - 11th December - 6th January
Join Jake Quickenden as Prince Charming as he takes to the streets of Southsea in Portsmouth to find his one true love Cinderella. With the help of the Fairy Godmother, we can get our glad rags on and transport ourselves to this great pantomime in our pumpkin carriage!
