From the stage to screen - 2021 musical film adapatations

If 2020 was the year of the streamed play, 2021 is the year of the movie musical. With more movie musicals taking to the big screen than ever before, I wanted to highlight the 4 that I think are ones you need to book a ticket for!

In The Heights - Based on the musical by Lin Manuel Miranda. In The Heights is based in Washington Heights, New York, an area that buzzes with hopes and dreams and a tight community in a vibrant part of town. It focuses on the lives of these locals and how they twist and shape each others futures and pasts through music that follows as seamless as the story. The music is a classic blend of Latina, hip hop and brilliant musical theatre and with a star studded cast of brilliant Broadway names, it's sure to be a hit. I can't wait to watch and I already have my tickets booked for opening weekend! Opens 18th June 2021.

Dear Evan Hansen - This is a musical that has taken both Broadway and the West End by storm. Based on the story of Evan, who is inadvertently caught up in the mourning of a classmate, this story covers topics such as suicide, serious mental health, and feeling like an outsider. Ben Platt who took the title role originally on Broadway has been cast as Evan and I'm still not 100% convinced on his casting, however it's a film that I'm 100% going to watch and I know I will probably cry over! Opens 22nd October 2021.

West Side Story - West Side Story was one of those films that made me fall in love with musicals. It's my mums favourite show and I can never not love that soundtrack that has toe tapping songs and beautiful ballads. Following Maria and Tony in their Romeo and Juliet romance, this show has been reimagined for a new audience whilst still sticking to its original roots. I'm already obsessed with Rachel Zegler who is making her big screen debut as Maria. Let's just say you'll have to decide if you want to be a Jet or a Shark before you enter the cinema screens. Opens 10th December 2021.

Everybody's Talking About Jamie - We have been impatiently waiting for this films release! After months of pushbacks due to the pandemic, this spectacular show is ready to make the small screen glitter as it's now being released on Amazon Prime! Again, with another fresh face in the title role, Jamie follows a young boy who wants to go to prom in a dress, but is faced with many barriers in order to get there. It's full of big show stopping numbers along with ones that will tug at your heart strings. It's a quintessentially British musical that is not to be missed (and you can watch it in your own home too!). Opens on 17th September 2021.
