Kinky Boots UK Tour Review - Mayflower Southampton

Ladies, Gentlemen and people who have yet to decide, if you are looking for a show that will dazzle and entertain you then look no further than Kinky Boots! The heart warming, jam packed musical that's about one man who makes shoes and another that was born to stand out in them. Hot on it's UK tour at the moment, it's just landed in Southampton at the Mayflower and we were invited along to watch it and boy was it a show that packed a punch!

Based on the hit film of the same name, Kinky Boots follows Charlie, a son of a shoemaker that just wants more from his life than following in the family trade. But no sooner as he escapes the humdrum of the life he doesn't want is he sent running back to deal with the business he left behind. When Charlie meets Lola, the eccentric drag queen that is like nothing he has ever seen before, they end up going on a glitter boot filled adventure of acceptance, self discovery and boots.

The show itself is fantastic. It's incredibly fast paced and really doesn't stop with its show stopping numbers and heart felt, sincere moments too. One moment you feel like getting up on your feet and dancing, whilst the next moment you are trying to scrabble for a tissue as the tears start to fall. A rollercoaster of emotions is an understatement, but you will leave the theatre with a huge smile on your face and feeling entertained from the opening bars to the closing line. With toe tapping songs such as Raise You Up and Land Of Lola and heart wrenching songs like Soul Of A Man and Not My Father's Son, you can tell that the cast has a fantastic vocal and performance range as they put 100% into each and every song.

I honestly couldn't fault the cast. Joel Harper-Jackson was fantastic as Charlie, showing us that you could be breaking hearts one minute and strutting down a catwalk the next. Whilst Paula Lane showed everyone that she was more than a soap star in her hilarious yet sincere rendition of Lauren, the girl that loves Charlie from afar whilst they work. I loved her performance in The History Of Wrong Guys as she struck the perfect balance of someone that his her feelings away through comedy, whilst letting herself embrace her crush.

But nothing can compare with Lola and her team of angels. Kayi Ushe stole the show for me and Max as Lola, the tough drag queen with a heart of pure gold. With speedy costume changes into outfits that you wish you could wear on a night out and belting performances, he honestly shone like a star on the stage. With his amazing troupe of queens alongside him, they raised everyones spirits andleft everyone with a smile on their faces. Each of them have to be admired for wearing those staggering heels and fantastic outfits day in, day out on stage and still looking effortless every time they did a twirl or kick. Bravo!

Kinky Boots is a celebration of being who you want to be, not worrying about standing out from the crowd and embracing everyone for who they are. It's a show that will leave a smile on your face and whisk you away from the weight of the world for a few hours. It's a perfect show that can brighten up anyone's day. Don't believe me? Then go see it for yourself. All I can say is wear your heart on your heels and glitter, feathers and a hot glue gun can make the world a prettier place.

Kinky Boots is on at the Mayflower in Southampton until the 14th September before continuing on a UK tour. You can find out more and book tickets here
