Top family shows to watch at The Mayflower Theatre - Southampton in 2021.

The Mayflower Theatre, Southampton is one of the most prestigious theatre's on the South Coast. It's a theatre that hosts everything from big show stopping musicals, to comedy and local youth theatre shows. The theatre prides itself on being fully inclusive, affordable and family friendly.

It's one of our favourite theatres to go to, and before the lockdown's happened, we were there at any available opportunity. With things slowly opening back up, and theatre's being allowed to return to jam packed programmes, I wanted to highlight some of the amazing family friendly shows that this brilliant theatre has to offer.

Mayflower 2021 Family Shows

Hairspray - 26th-31st July - This big musical has a big cast, a big soundtrack and some even bigger dancing that will have you moving and grooving in your seat. Featuring a star studded cast you follow the enigmatic and loveable Tracy Turnblad as she dreams and dances her way onto the big screen and into the hearts of everyone she meets. This 60's musical will have you singing "You Can't Stop The Beat" as you meet the "Nicest Kids In Town". Recommended for age 9-10+, this musical is a long one, but so worth it!

Dragons and Mythical Beasts - 8th August - There is something magical about even just the idea of dragons and other mythical creatures. From the creators of the awe inspiring Dinosaur World Live, Dragons and Mythical Beasts allows these magical creatures to come to life on stage as you find out more about them, uncover some unexpected secrets and come face to face with the scariest dragon of all. Suitable for children age 3+, this interactive show will allow even the bravest of explorers to discover a magical world.

Six - 10th-15th August - One for the older kids, this girl group inspired retelling of the lives of Henry VIII's wives is one not to be missed. Whilst only coming it at 80 minutes long, this show does not stop moving, singing and inspiring everyone that watches it. With inspirations from the pop hits of recent times blended with the sass and feistiness of 6 killer queens, this is a must watch show. Aimed at children age 12+, it does contain some strong language and themes, but would also be appropriate for children just a tad younger!

Pop Princesses - 26th September -  Perfect for your little princes' and princesses, this show is aimed at those little fans as they watch beautiful princesses turn into pretty cool pop stars. This brilliant pop concert style performance blends chart hits with classic princess songs to amaze and wow those little people in your life. With an age suitability of 2+, it's the perfect introduction to theatre for families with younger children.

Magic Goes Wrong - 26th-30th October - Mischief Theatre are one of those theatre companies that can do no wrong in my eyes. The perfect blend of improv, stylised mishaps and comedic timing means that every show they put on is one that will have you crying with laughter until the last bow. Having sought advice from the utterly brilliant Penn and Teller, Magic Goes Wrong is based on a gang of magicians staging a fundraising evening that doesn't go to plan. The perfect half term show for the whole family. Recommended age is 11+, but we are most certainly going to book tickets and Max is just under that age!

Grease - 9th-13th November - Grease is most definitely the word, and this show is perfect for all those T-Birds and Pink Ladies who want to drive in, slick their hair back and dance the hand jive at the school dance. With the brilliant Peter Andre stepping into the role of Teen Angel, this show is the perfect show for teens to discover why Grease is the one that they want. Perfect for children age 12+, there are strong themes in this musical.

Fireman Sam Live - 14th November - One for the young families! Fireman Sam is taking to the big stage to come to the rescue and save the day when the circus comes to town. With firefighting action and musical songs for the whole family, this 60 minute show is perfect for the whole family to enjoy.

The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe - 23rd-27th November - A classic childhood tale adapted beautifully for the stage. Step through the wardrobe and encounter the wonderful world of Narnia that is full of visually beautiful staging, wonderful characters and magic that will leave you astounded. Straight from the London stage, this retelling is a must watch for the winter nights. Perfect for families age 6+, this show runs approximately 2hrs and 30 minutes.

Cinderella - 10th December-2nd January - Cinderella shall go to the ball in this brilliant panto that is perfect for the whole family. With a strictly star studded cast including Craig Revel Horwood and Debbie McGee, this panto has rolled over from 2020 to this year to ensure that everyone gets the chance to try on the glass slipper and have their happily ever after. With all the fun and games that a pantomime has in store, this festive treat will be perfect for those young and old.
