Hairspray UK Tour - Review Southampton Mayflower

When I was a child, Tracy Turnblad was one of those characters that I felt somewhat connected to. It might have been the love of singing and dancing, or the fact we were both slightly larger than life trying to make it in a small world. Because of this, Hairspray has always held some place in my heart and when I knew it was heading on tour, it was a show that I knew I had to see.

As an aside, being one of the first shows to return to Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, it also felt special as it was the first time in 18 months that both me and Max has stepped foot in a theatre. To say that there were tears in our eyes would be completely true. We were just honoured and thankful to be back in a theatre after such a long time away. It honestly felt like we were home.

Family Shows at Portsmouth Theatre's 2021

Portsmouth is a wonderful city full of brilliant theatre's. With two amazing places to choose from, the classic Kings Theatre and the brilliant New Theatre Royal, you are truly spoilt for choice with what to watch. There is something that is perfect for the whole family to enjoy, and here are 5 of the shows that I think you must watch now their doors are open wide.

Fireman Sam Live - 22nd August - Kings Theatre - He's on his way to save the day! Time for that Fireman we all know and love to take to the stage of Portsmouth and show the locals what the Pontypandy fire crew can do to save the day!

Illusion : Impossible - 8th September - Kings Theatre - Featuring five of the best illusion acts, this breathtaking show will allow audiences to be amazed and stunned by these incredible talents all on one stage together. It's a show that will have adults and kids alike left with jaws on the floor and wondering just how they pulled it off.

Horrible Histories - 3rd October - New Theatre Royal - Meet the Gorgeous Georgians and the Vile Victorians in this horribly hilarious retelling of those dead icons including Admiral Nelson, Florence Nightingale and Queen Victoria. Based off the books and TV series of the same name, this is sure to be a hit for those slightly older kids that love to hear the bloody truth!

The Play That Goes Wrong - 12th-17th October - Kings Theatre - If you are looking for a show that will leave you laughing so much your belly hurts then this is the one for you. The show is based around a fictitious theatre group who are trying to put on a play, only things don't quite go to plan and the fallout with shock you in more ways than one. Perfect for slightly older kids, this play is perfect to watch and one that will sell out for sure.

Dragons & Mythical Beasts - 5th-7th November - New Theatre Royal - Calling all brave heroes! This interactive show will bring puppets and mythical creatures to life to amaze and astound the audiences. From the creators of Dinosaur World Live, it's time to meet the unicorns, trolls and the deathly dragon.

Kids Arena at Victorious Festival 2021

The Kid's Arena at Victorious Festival is one not to be missed. It's one of my favourite areas of the festival and one that rightfully so makes it the perfect festival for the whole family. This year's Kids Arena line up has been announced and it's just as jam packed as you could hope that it is.

The Kids Arena of the festival is open on both Saturday and Sunday, and is full to the brim of things to do. It's full of big name acts, local community area's and even free activities for the kids to enjoy. It has a proper community feel that allows your whole family to feel relaxed and able to enjoy the weekend. With things that appeal to both littles (funfair rides, baby play) and older kids (skate park, gaming area) there is something to tick everyone's boxes.

Nestled in the middle of the Kids Arena is the kids stage. This is where the main action happens. With a brilliant blend of local artists and big names, alongside meet and greets and a compere to keep the kids entertained, it's a laugh a minute. Headlining the kids stage on Saturday is Maddie Moate, the Cbeebies star that is there to both educate and entertain, whilst the festival favourites Andy and the Odd Socks will bring their hilarity back to the main stage as they headline on Sunday. The entertainment doesn't stop there though, as you will find both The Gruffalo, Hey Duggee and Paw Patrol taking to the stage too!

And if that wasn't enough (there is more!!), there is plenty of things to keep the little one's busy including Jedi School, Lidl's Lidl Mudder, Circus Skills and Glow Up Yoga. Alongside all of there, there are stalls run by brilliant community groups with plenty of things to do for free, or for a small fee. Perfect for keeping everyone entertained on whatever budget you may have.

With all this on offer it's hard to imagine that tickets for the festival start at just £1 a day for kid's under 5 and £8 a day for those age 5-12. With brilliant accessibility for buggies, and plenty of places for changing, toilets and food, it's the perfect festival day out for the whole family!

LAMDA Exams - What to expect and how to prepare

Max has been acting with his theatre group Stagewise since he was 4. As he has become older, he has realised that acting and music are really a huge passion and something that he would like to pursue in the future. As part of his journey to become a little thespian, Max has begun his journey into entering LAMDA acting exams.

Max has worked tirelessly with his drama coach to create some truly awesome monologues that he performed in his exams. As a mum sat outside waiting for him to complete it, I can definitely say that I was probably more nervous than him! Max did so well and recently got his results, that landed him with a strong distinction grade. Something that he is super proud of!

As a mum new to this whole LAMDA exam thing, I can honestly say I didn't know what to expect, nor did I know how to fully prepare Max for these exams. Whilst I wouldn't say that I'm an expert now, I can definitely share some of those little tips that I picked up on the way.

  • Find a coach who you get along with. Max does his LAMDA lesson's with his drama teacher and they have such a fab relationship. She knows exactly when to push him, and when to let him work it out for himself. She also isn't afraid to tell it like it is and will often tell him when he needs a push as well as when he is smashing it.

  • Pick two contrasting pieces. You want to show the examiner exactly what you can do. Max picked one sombre, sad piece that could have made the examiner cry, and also a piece that was full of energy and could make the examiner laugh. This meant that the pieces were distinct, different and showed his range.

  • Wear non-distracting clothing. Max went into the exam in some loose shorts (as it was super hot!) and a plain black top with his jazz shoes on. This way the examiner can completely focus on the acting rather than what you look like.

  • Practice outside. We live in a tiny flat and Max was struggling with both the space for movement and the projection for his voice. We took to the local park, to our car-park and anywhere else we could find that was large and empty to practice that vocal projection. You might look silly for a few minutes, but honestly it worked wonders for us!

  • Say hello, smile and roll your shoulders back. Allow yourself to stand tall, take a moment to breathe and remember that the examiner is just a normal person too. Max's examiner was lovely and had a good joke with Max about one of his pieces.

  • Don't forget your paperwork! We took two copies of our script and a copy of the marking guide into the exams with us. They allowed the examiner to follow your piece and make sure you are word perfect, whilst also giving them something to mark your piece on!

  • Take time to learn your piece. Not just the script itself, that comes as standard. Have a think about the emotion, the setting, how the character is feeling and why you are playing the piece the way you are. These are all things that the examiner might ask you, so have a think and really embody the character before you start the monologue.

  • Enjoy it! There is no use you taking all the time to practice the exam only for you to hate it once you are in there. Slow down the pace, take a moment to really enjoy the acting and remember that the results are out of your hand. No matter the result, you have done a fantastic and brave thing to even step into that examination room.

Festival Focus 2021: Camp Bestival

Festival: Camp Bestival

Date: 29/30/31 July 2021- 1st August 2021

Location: Lulworth Castle, Dorset.

Camping: There is plenty of general camping, that is all family friendly. Alongside this, there are specific area's for boutique, backstage and camper camping to fit the perfect festival holiday for everyone. There is a premium camping area, with allocated spaces for everyone, but the camping is all within walking distance of the arena. Be aware that there are some serious hills that can prove quite tricky in adverse weather!

Top acts: A night of club nostalgia with Fatboy Slim, the 90's hype of the Vengaboys, and Friendly Fires bringing the guitars to the main stage. For kids, there is the hilarious Andy and the Odd Socks, Mr Tumble and Braniac Live.

Perfect for families because: Camp Bestival is one of the most popular family festivals in the country. It's a top of the list and the perfect starter festival for those families unsure if festivals are really their thing. With a kids area that spans as big as the rest of the arena, it's full of wonders and fun at every corner. There is something for all ages and it truly does feel fully inclusive from babes in arms to teenagers.

Top tips: If camping, make sure you are prepared for the hills and valleys. It's definitely a bit of a trek to get back to the campsite if you are camped right near the car park. There are plenty of opportunities to upgrade your camping experience and land yourself closer to the action, but these prices can run high at times.

Secondly, there is plenty of free activities for kids to do, including abseiling, high ropes and whittling, but these get booked up really early. Be prepared to get to the booking point as soon as the arena opens in the morning to allow your little ones to get a spot to have some fun.

Finally, bring a wagon/off road buggy etc. It will allow your little ones the time to rest, you will have plenty of storage so you don't have to go to the tent several times a day, and it will allow you the time to dance in the evenings whilst your little ones snooze.

Hidden gems: The Caravanserai is our favourite place to hang out for a few hours. Full of eclectic music, caravans for the kids to explore, and gorgeous cocktails, it's the little gem that packs a punch in the heart of the festival.

There are many places for little ones to chill out and rest, with play parks and climbing area's for the whole family to just rest and take some time to regroup and plan the next part of their day. Don't be afraid to go down a winding path, hide behind the tree's and find your own part of the festival.

Festival Focus 2021: Isle Of Wight Festival

Date: 216/17/18/19 September 2021

Location: Seaclose Park, Newport, Isle of Wight

Camping: There is plenty of general camping, premium camping and local hotels to stay in. All camping is on the festival site and covers everything from glamping to family camping.

Top acts: A personal highlight would be the Liam Gallagher, Sam Fender and You Me At Six. This festival covers everything from the 80's through to the present day to appeal to everyone no matter the age!

Perfect for families because: Whilst the family area's are yet to be confirmed, in previous years the festival has been incredibly family friendly and brilliant for little ones along with the not so little ones! Be aware that this isn't a dedicated family festival, so there will be more catered for adults as opposed to other festivals like Camp Bestival and Victorious.

Top tips: Plan, plan, plan. As mentioned above, this festival isn't necessarily a family festival. There are normally dedicated family camping area's that are more quiet than others, and it's best to position yourself further back from the action to not get caught up in the rush of people heading to see their favourite bands.

Hidden gems: Definitely check out some of the local acts! There are normally some hidden gems that will quite often hit main stages in years to come.
