Portsmouth is a wonderful city full of brilliant theatre's. With two amazing places to choose from, the classic Kings Theatre and the brilliant New Theatre Royal, you are truly spoilt for choice with what to watch. There is something that is perfect for the whole family to enjoy, and here are 5 of the shows that I think you must watch now their doors are open wide.

Victorious Festival 2019 - Saturday Review

Day one of Victorious Festival was full of glorious sunshine, brilliant music and a well needed early night. Day two of Victorious was set to be hotter, and even more jam packed than the day before. With our suncream on, water bottles at the ready and on the first park and ride bus of the day, we were off! After a brilliant Friday, we couldn't wait to show Scott what the festival had in store for 2019. And with so many great new additions for us to explore we got stuck right in for day two of Max's favourite weekend of the year.

Victorious Festival 2019 - Friday Review

One of our favourite weekends of the year is Victorious Festival. It's a festival that if you know us personally, or online you know that we go on about more than any other family event in the year. Set in the heart of Portsmouth on Southsea Common, Victorious is the perfect family festival that's not only affordable, but jam packed with amazing things to do throughout the whole weekend.

Victorious 2018 Saturday Review

With the sun shining down, we couldn't wait to head to Victorious Festival for day 2 of fun and games. Knowing that the weather was going to turn on Sunday we got to the festival as soon as gates opened with a plan of staying until the end.

Armed with the timetable lanyard (that had been lovingly marked the night before with our must watch artists!) we couldn't run into the arena quick enough.

Victorious 2018 Friday Review

As always, Victorious Festival is our favourite way to end the summer holidays. Not only do we get to see Scott's parents for the weekend (well use their place as a crash pad!), but we also get to listen to some fantastic music in a great community atmosphere. There's something fantastic about Victorious that has us loving it year after year and always wanting to go back.

This year was no different. With a stellar line up, we decided to head down for the Friday evening to check out some of the music on this condensed first day.

Cirque Berserk Review - Kings Theatre Portsmouth

Seeing the circus is a bit of a rite of passage for most children. The thrill of being amazed and marvelled by strange and wonderful goings on up on the stage. It's something magical that everyone old and young are captivated by. Cirque Berserk is a show based on the startling and stunning array of acrobatics and stunts that keep people on the edge of their seats. We were recently invited to watch Cirque Berserk at the Kings Theatre, Portsmouth to have a night of fun and fantasy!

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard Review

Since being at school, Max has become obsessed with history and learning things about the past he's grown up around. So when we were recently invited to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard to view some of their attractions, we could hardly say no!

We tend to go to Portsmouth every month to see extended family, so we tied this visit in with a stay with family and I brought along my lovely mother in law Sandi for the ride. Having lived in Portsmouth her whole life, and not visiting the dockyard for many years, she was excited to share her knowledge and fill us in on what has changed and updated.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat

When we found out that Max's stage school Stagewise would be performing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat as their musical of the year, I knew that I had to take Max to see it before he took to the stage. There's something great about watching something that you will perform, taking in the atmosphere and getting a feel for how the story flows through the music. I was chatting with Max's friends mum and we both agreed that we would try and take them on an adventure.

Fortunately we found out that there was going to be a performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat at the New Theatre Royal in Portsmouth, so we booked tickets in a flash of light.

Getting Ready for Victorious Festival

We absolutely love going to festivals. We were gutted when we didn't get to go to any last year, Max was under strict instructions to stay indoors due to his back. It did mean that we rocked out to many a festival on the TV though.

This year we opted against camping festivals. We absolutely love Camp Bestival and Isle of Wight but nothing beats curling up in your own bed at the end of a tiring day rocking out. We have already been to a few local festivals and are super excited to head to Victorious Festival in Portsmouth at the end of the month.

Victorious Festival is a 2 day festival set in the gorgeous Southsea, Portsmouth. Full of fantastic music such as Noel Gallagher and Manic Street Preachers, you will literally pinch yourself at the £35 per day entry ticket! Not only do they have brilliant music, but they also have an amazing kids area filled with famous faces such as Cook and Line. There is also some treasures such as Happy's Circus and even Portsmouth University with some brilliant astronomy activities. We honestly can't wait to pop down.

Unlike camping festivals, day festivals like Victorious are a perfect way to ease yourself into the idea of a family friendly festival. Not only do you get to avoid camping and dodgy showers, but you also get to experience the full festival atmosphere.

One thing to note is that there are normally a few differences such as parking (we have paid extra for a pre booked parking space close by, Victorious has some fantastic transport links though) and food (no pre-bought food is allowed on site, same goes for opened drinks). However we have put together some of the things that are going into our bag when we head off to Victorious Festival.

  • Fujifilm Instax Camera - We literally take this everywhere. It's a fantastic way of taking instant memorable photos. Of course we have our phone too, but it means that we won't be carrying around an expensive bit of kit alongside everything else.
  • Water Bottle - We love this one by HydrateM8 as it shows you how much you should be drinking on the bottle. Being at a festival, the time can run away with you. So having a bottle with a reminder can keep your kids topped up no matter what!
  • Fjallraven Kanken Classic Bag - This is my favourite bag ever. Not only is it incredibly lightweight, it is also hardwearing and is deceptively bigger than it seems. Perfect for cramming in all those baby wipes and other festival essentials.
  • Pac a Mac - A pac a mac is a must. Even if you only bring one for the kids. We take one everywhere, especially at festivals as there really is little shelter when the floodgates open. I normally have one for Max and throw some disposable ponchos in the bag for me and Scott.
  • Sun Hat - Since Max got his burn, we are ultra careful when it comes to sun care. A hat is a must for a festival, even if it seems overcast! Normally there's still lots of UV rays that can damage your skin. Teaming a hat with regular sun cream use means that we can ensure he is covered (and cool) as possible!
  • Ear Defenders - This is a vital in my opinion. Kids ears are much more sensitive than adults, so ear defenders are perfect for keeping the ears protected. Max has had his since he was 6 months old and they still fit him now so are a fantastic investment. We don't use them all the time but certainly make sure he has them on when he gets close to the stage at events.
We cannot wait to indulge in some good old festival fun. Max has been counting down the days and I have been writing my packing lists like a maniac. It may only be 2 days but I love to be prepared and have the car packed for any eventuality. We are super excited for Victorious Festival, hope to see you there!
