It's still not sunk in that this time next week is Max's birthday. It feels like only yesterday he was a little chubby baby but now he's a boy. I can't even call him a toddler now he's at school. Looking back I don't think I would ever have thought we would have grown so much as a family. Little man, you've grown to be a fine wild thing. Never stop growing.
An Autumn Forest Walk
Wednesday, 18 November 2015
Max's school are really good with setting home learning activities. We get most of a half term to complete them but they want family to be as involved as possible. This half term he was set the task of going on an autumn walk and discovering how it was different to summer. We hopped in the car and headed to the New Forest to see what we could learn.
Of course we needed a sit down and so we munched on these healthy Tracker bar's which are a favourite snack in our house. They are so much better than grabbing a chocolate bar and the boys love the variety of flavours.
But we needed to get back to work discovering the wonders of autumn. Max soon found leaves as big as his head, logs that had fallen and trees that reminded him of Christmas. Fortunately we got back to the car before it started raining. But we spent the afternoon and evening making a gorgeous story out of our trip.
Next time he wants to go on a bear hunt though.
Penwizard Ben & Holly's Personalised Christmas Book
Tuesday, 17 November 2015
We are a family of bookworms. We've got pretty much every picture book you can buy but are always on the lookout for something new. So when Penwizard approached me about reviewing their personalised Ben & Holly Christmas book we couldn't say yes fast enough.
Penwizard are a fab company that create personalised books for children that feature famous faces such as Peppa, Frozen, the Snowman and of course Ben & Holly. Max has always had a soft spot for the show about fairies and elves so I knew he would love reading this book with us.
The process for buying the book was easy, you just put in the child's name, selected if they were an elf or fairy and then customised the colours so it looked like your child. I honestly didn't think it would be that easy as I had set aside a good while to work through the site when it was a few clicks of a button. You are shows the front cover so you can check spellings and then the book arrives within a few days.
We went for the new Ben & Holly Christmas at the North Pole book. It tells the story of your character helping Ben & Holly save the toy disaster before Christmas Eve is up. Max is learning to read at the moment and this book is the perfect level for him to read to us at bedtime. In fact he's read it every single night since we got it!
Max loved the fact that his name was there in the book and quickly pointed out his character with glee. It was such a pleasure to show him such a special book, one that will be treasured for years to come. The personal touches in the book made Max question me at least 100 times how he got in a book and if he could magic himself into his other stories.
We opted for the softcover book at £14.99 as it's easier to handle than a big hardback but even at £19.99 I think that these are a perfect price for a gift for a little someone. And with so many choices you'll be wishing there was one for you too.
As a bonus I have a £3 off coupon for all my readers. Just use the code PENWIZARD3 at checkout to get your money off. This is valid until the 15th December which is the cut off for Christmas orders
Plus I'm also giving away a Ben & Holly Christmas book to one of you fab readers. Just follow the instructions below. Good Luck!

A Cold After School Treat
Monday, 9 November 2015
Getting back into the school run after half term has been a struggle. The mornings are darker, colder and I think we would all prefer to snuggle under the covers instead of getting wet on a walk to school.
I'm not a milk drinker, I have an intolerance and try and steer clear but the boys drink pints of the stuff. We normally find that cheaper brands of milk start to sour quite quickly and don't hold the fresh flavour which is why I tend to pick up Cravendale.
Milk is a great source of calcium for kids and we give Max a cup a day in some form or another. Of course he eats other various sources of dairy but you can never go wrong with a cup or two of milk to make sure you are getting the full amount.
When it comes to after school snacks we love to warm up a bit with a hot chocolate. I normally melt some milk chocolate with some milk until it's smooth and then add cold milk to make it a cooler temperature to drink. For a treat I then add a handful of marshmallows whilst we turn on a DVD and settle down to unwind.
I love these moments with Max as there aren't many chances I can get to snuggle with him as he's a boy that's started to think hugs and kisses are icky. It's crazy to see how fast he's growing and with a cup of milk a day he's bound to be bigger than me soon!

I am Thankful.
Sunday, 8 November 2015
Being thankful for the little things can easily be forgotten in the grand scheme of life. We normally find that in the hustle and bustle of school run's, cleaning and homework we forget about the things we can be grateful for.
I've always wondered what I would say I was thankful for if we had Thanksgiving here in the UK. It's always seemed like a simple celebration, which is no surprise that 1 in 6 households seem to celebrate it. So I've put together a list of things that I'm thankful for.

- I'm thankful for the mornings where Max creeps into our bed just to give us cuddles and kisses.
With Max getting older I savour these moments as soon enough he's going to be too big to want to hug and kiss me which breaks my heart. He's got such a loving soul and wants to make us and everyone else happy. - I'm thankful for movie nights as a family, but also with Scott alone.
We don't have the opportunity to go on many date nights and the cinema is becoming so expensive for us to go out as a family. We try and implement regular movie nights where we get the sofa bed out, bundle blankets and snacks in the room, dim the lights and pop on something that we haven't seen before. - I'm thankful for a home that keeps us warm and a roof over our head.
We may not live in a big home, it may not be one that we own but I'm thankful for the fact we have a place to call ours. We might have student debts hanging over our heads and not a lot in the bank but it doesn't mean we can't be happy. We've looked at potentially getting a homeowner's loan but feel that at the moment we are fine trundling along. Someday we will own a property!
Will you be celebrating Thanksgiving this year? If so what will you be thankful for?
Erth's Dinosaur Zoo - Lighthouse Poole
Saturday, 7 November 2015
There's something amazing about dinosaurs. That fact we've learnt so much about them even though they have been gone for 65 million years just makes them amazing creatures. I've lost count of the amount of times we have watched Jurassic Park and Max has pretended that he is a dinosaur handler (he's convinced it's a real job). If this sounds a bit familiar in your house then you might need to book to see this show.
Erth's Dinosaur Zoo is an immersive puppet show all about these amazing creatures. There is a handful of dinosaur keepers that introduce you to each dinosaur, whilst the others control the dinosaur puppets. You can see them being moved and you are told they are puppets at the beginning but that doesn't stop even the adults getting a bit scared when the T-Rex starts roaring and snapping near your face!
In each section they invite members of the audience up to stage meaning that you could end up being the dinosaurs new best friend or even lunch! The show was nearly an hour long and kept Max captivated the whole time, which is pretty unheard of with his attention span.
The best bit? They have some of the dinos on hand after the show for a meet and greet. They did have one of the big dinosaurs in the theatre but we decided to skip that (the queue would have taken hours) and opt to meet all the baby dinosaurs out in the foyer. Max absolutely loved this as he got to hold the baby T-Rex. He's quite proud of that fact!
The show was held at the Lighthouse in Poole. It's definitely one of our favourite arts centres as they always have the best kid's events and this was no exception. Thank's Lighthouse for booking another amazing show!

The Gateway, Eastleigh Table Table Review
Friday, 6 November 2015
After an exhausting half term we wanted to wind down our week and catch up with my brother. We rarely get to see him as he's always on the go so we couldn't turn down the chance to take him to The Gateway in Eastleigh. The Gateway is part of the Table Table chain and is the perfect place between Southampton and Portsmouth and just off the M3.
We turned up a little early and were seated in the waiting area by the friendly staff. They were really accommodating and let us change our table so that Max was on a couch side with me rather than on a chair on his own side. This normally results in him dropping things and losing concentration so to know they were flexible was great!

I went for the chocolate fudge cake. I didn't expect it to be as big as what it was but it was gorgeous. Soft sponge and slick fudge icing that made me want to take the whole cake home! Unfortunately I couldn't finish it all, but Max took over and managed to clear my plate as well as his.
We really enjoyed our time at The Gateway. We had a great food with a great atmosphere and the staff made us feel really welcome. It was a great chance to catch up with my brother and have something to eat, it's also in a great spot that took us no time at all to find!
Thank you to Table Table for inviting us to try your menu. We would highly recommend visiting your local one and enjoying the fantastic food they have on offer.

We knew we wanted starters so the boys shared some sticky bbq wings whilst me and Max dove into the bread platter. I loved the presentation and Max enjoyed dunking and buttering his bread. The boys said that the wings had just the right consistency of bbq to make it perfectly messy!
For the children's mains there is a great menu. You get to pick your own main and two sides from a really good list. Max was so excited as he could pick the exact things he loved to eat. He went for a beef burger, corn on the cob and jacket potato. There wasn't much in the way of presentation but that didn't stop him wolfing it down and saying he loved every bit.

For the adults both Scott and Joe opted for the paprika chicken and bbq ribs. We paid a bit extra to upgrade them from half racks to full racks and by the end of it they were stuffed. They loved the twist on the flavours and said it made a change from a normal ribs and chicken combo.
I went for the scampi and chips with mushy peas. I'm a tad obsessed with mushy peas and we don't eat much seafood at home so it's normally a go-to option for me. There was a great portion size and they even gave me a second pot of tartare sauce when I finished mine too soon.
When it came to desserts, Scott and Joe settled for ice cream as they hadn't got much room left to eat anything else. Me and Max on the other hand couldn't wait to try something on the menu. Max opted for the cookie cup, a bowl that was made out of a cookie with a scoop of ice cream and sprinkles all over. Max called it magic on a plate which is pretty apt!

Gift Ideas For Harry Potter Fans
Thursday, 5 November 2015
We have a bit of a Harry Potter obsessive in the house. Since it popped up on Now TV not a day goes by where Max doesn't beg us to watch one of the films. He's had a sudden rush of Potter related things on his Christmas list and is eagerly rushing to the door each day to see if his Hogwarts letter has arrived (he's got a bit of a time to wait!). So here are some gift ideas for your little witches and wizards.
