Christmas Spectacular.

On Christmas Eve we decided to take an excited Max to see a show. Not just any show. A Christmas Spectacular!

My friends are all theatre nuts, we have been most of our lives and this was set to be a wonderful mash up of Christmas songs with a story about an elf convention! It was amazing. Max loved it. He was fascinated by Santa and our friends that played the elves. He sung along to all the songs he knew and danced and booed in all the right places.

And to top it all off we had cake in a gorgeous dessert bar before we went in! What a lucky boy.

Max's Nativity

So Max had his nativity and carol concert on Wednesday and he did amazing! Singing along to all the songs, acting when he was supposed to and acting like a diva he was born to be!

In his carol concert he was dressed as a reindeer so he could sing jingle bells.

In the nativity he was dressed as a camel so he could take the three kings to give their gifts. Unfortunately one boy didn't want to go up so max being max donned a crown and went down as a king camel!

We're definitely in the Christmas spirit here!

Ciate Mini Mani Month

Last year I lusted after the Mini Mani Month advent calendar from Ciate. This year I couldn't back down and bought one. I managed to get a really great deal on ASOS with some codes so it was knocked down to an amazing £25. For 24 varnishes I couldn't say no!

Of course I received it a week after the 1st so I had to open all the windows. I'm not great with suspense and knowing that I had some amazing ones to look at I delved in!

There is an amazing selection of varnishes. From base and top coats to pastels and glitters. There is a lot of silvers in there which put me off a bit slightly but then I normally use silver as an accent colour and then realised that some have glitter and some don't show up as bright as others. My mum is a trained nail technician so of course she had to have a delve in it and she was pleasantly surprised at the amazing range for the price that I paid. She may have her eye on a few to steal off me but I know her too well.

Fri-Dad. The Christmas Carol Edition.

Hello weekend and hello blogging community.

The festivities are becoming commonplace around us all. I suppose you believe I am in full festive mode...you'd be wrong. I'm not a Scrooge, but I'm certainly not a nutter for the holiday. I have work, more work, interviews, no time to do work, a child who's chosen to throw teenage strops, no money and no patience. Being a parent through the festive period is clearly tougher and less joyous than being a child. We now see the strings to the ever extravagant puppet display that is Christmas...or perhaps you don't celebrate, which is a darn sight cheaper.

So to sour the sweet sound of holiday cheer, I have compiled my miserable, jaded ode to parenting through Christmas. It's my '12 days of Christmas' parody featuring Paul Potts and Skrillex. Enjoy and feel free to sing this to yourselves as the realisation of the holiday stress mounts:

On the first day of Christmas my child gave to me, a headache from singing carols WRONG!

On the second day of Christmas my child gave to me, two tired eyes and a headache from singing carols WRONG!

On the third day of Christmas my child gave to me, three tantrums, two tired eyes and a headache from singing carols WRONG!

On the fourth day of Christmas my child gave to me, four common colds, three tantrums, two tired eyes and a headache from singing carols WRONG!

On the fifth day of Christmas my child gave to me, FIVE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS! four common colds, three tantrums, two tired eyes and a headache from singing carols WRONG!

On the sixth day of Christmas my child gave to me, six shitty nappies (I apologise in advanced for the expletive), FIVE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS! four common colds, three tantrums, two tired eyes and a headache from singing carols WRONG!

On the seventh day of Christmas my child gave to me, seven spoilt dinners, six shitty nappies, FIVE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS! four common colds, three tantrums, two tired eyes and a headache from singing carols WRONG!

On the eighth day of Christmas my child gave to me, eight mounds of washing, seven spoilt dinners, six shitty nappies, FIVE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS! four common colds, three tantrums, two tired eyes and a headache from singing carols WRONG!

On the ninth day of Christmas my child gave to me, nine nightmares of siblings, eight mounds of washing, spoilt dinners, six shitty nappies, FIVE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS! four common colds, three tantrums, two tired eyes and a headache from singing carols WRONG!

On the tenth day of Christmas my child gave to me, ten trips to Toy Shops, nine nightmares of siblings, eight mounds of washing, seven spoilt dinners, six shitty nappies, FIVE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS! four common colds, three tantrums, two tired eyes and a headache from singing carols WRONG!

On the eleventh day of Christmas my child gave to me, eleven pee'd on presents, ten trips to Toy Shops, nine nightmares of siblings, eight mounds of washing, seven spoilt dinners, six shitty nappies, FIVE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS! four common colds, three tantrums, two tired eyes and a headache from singing carols WRONG!

...get ready for the mash up...

On the twelfth day of Christmas my child gave to me, twelve trashed treasures, eleven pee'd on presents, ten trips to Toy Shops, nine nightmares of siblings, eight mounds of washing, seven spoilt dinners, six shitty nappies, FIVE SLEEPLESS NIGHTS! four common colds, three tantrums, two tired eyes and a heavy dose of parent reality!

Hope you liked it, hope someone records this with Paul Potts and Skrillex to go viral and hopefully get it to Number 1 instead of Cliff Richard or X Factor or worse...BOTH!. The money for downloads can go towards all the booze parents need to help them make it through.

There you go, not your usual FriDad post. Truth is I am quite happy, but it's fun to revel in the stress we go through. I shall be keeping it easy through the holidays as I have writing to get back to loving. Until next week, have a great weekend.

Birchbox November.

Okay, hands up. I have never got a beauty box before. Not because I didn't want to. But more so for the fact that I didn't really think it was worth it. That was until I saw an offer on Birchbox to get 3 goodies when I signed up and thought that for £12 it might be worth it for a couple of months.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not the best when it comes to beauty. I know what I like and I refuse to stray from it. Only if I have to or some amazing sample comes along to try. Having said that I was genuinely surprised at what I found in this box. And surprisingly to me I actually might use all of it!

  • First up was the Model Co Party Proof Lipstick. To be honest I hate lipstick. I find it tacky, it doesn't stay on and it always feels really heavy on my lips. I prefer to use my chubby stick and lip scrubs. Having said that I actually really liked this. Maybe it was the cheap brands I was jumping on but this wasn't too in your face and stayed put longer than I expected. Even better? Not tacky at all!
  • Next up was Laura Mercier Body Butter. Again I'm stuck in my way and used to using good old Soap and Glory body butter. Having said that this was a lovely alternative to use on the go in my handbag when I was at work (I've been working in a cold stock room so have been topping up with body lotion to stop my skin drying out). I don't think I would buy it again, only because I feel that it didn't do any different to my other stuff.
  • I loved the Weleda Citrus Body Wash, it was light and fresh and a great wake up. It reminded me of a creamy version of Natural Source with the vivid smell. I do love the fact it's natural as my skin can flare up really badly but then again it is quite expensive for a body wash.
  • The Beauty Protector Protect and Detangle didn't really seem to work too well. I don't straighten my hair anymore so it didn't really need any heat protection but it didn't seem to detangle as well as I would have hoped. Having said that it did smell gorgeous.
I also received some Pukka Herbs teas which the other half snatched up as soon as I turned my back! A sample of English Laundry perfume which was gorgeous and has been definitely added to my christmas list and finally a pencil sharpener which came at just the right time as mine has suddenly disappeared.

I think I'll definitely grab the next couple of boxes. Only to see if it's still worth it but other than that I really enjoyed it as it felt like a great present just for me!

Top 5 Ideal Christmas Presents a Mum Would Love

1. Kitchen utensils
For mums that cook, kitchen utensils will be the most ideal and useful gifts handy for day to day responsibilities. There's a reason why people say no one's cooking will ever taste as good as their mother'sit's because they can't ever replace those first food experiences they had with anything else. Even if your mum wasn't the world's greatest chef, her one specialty would inevitably become the most delicious dish you could imagine and it's sure to make you nostalgic. So invest in it!
To celebrate the mums who love spending time in the kitchen, gift her cooking items that will make her time in there more enjoyable. Some can be pretty and practical, and they can be the kind of things that willremind her of you every time she looks at them. The key with giving a gift that appears, on first glance, to be asking mum to whip you up a plate is to choose things that show how well you know her and how much you care. Add in an extra little touch (consider her tastes) and she'll know this isn't about being uncreative.

2. Skin Care Products
As much as mums always appear to have a facade of invincibility, they are women too, and they face issues with self-confidence as they age. To alleviate such concerns and to make your mother feel more beautiful, consider gifting her a set of skin care products. There are several companies that offer high quality sets, such as Shiseido, Clinique, and RoC, and provide a wide variety of skin care related products to fit every mother's skin type.

3. A Gift card/Coupon for a Day at the Spa and Massage
Give your mum an opportunity to get away from stressby offering her a coupon for a trip to the spa and a relieving massage. Sometimes, a break is all someone needs to feel rejuvenated.

4. Lasting Accessories and Watches
Rather than gifting several small items which lackdurability, consider getting a high quality accessory for your mum this holiday. Whether it's a 24K gold bracelet or necklace, statement jewelry or a minimalist accessory, lasting gifts (especially the ones that sparkle) will impress your mother, as well as show her that you are willing to sacrifice much for her happiness (after all, that 24K gold bracelet wasn't quite cheap). Accessories such as watches are becoming one apopular and fashionable gift this holiday season. Obviously, you can check the time more accessibly, but watches are becoming a staple in closets of trend keepers and setters as the go to statement accessory item. To view some of the fashionable women's watches from Longines, you can visit:http://www.watches-of-switzerland.co.uk/brands/longines-watches.

5. Homemade Gifts
What's a better gift than one made by the hands of someone you love? Mothers love thoughtfulness, although gold, sparkly, items are aesthetically pleasing, it's the thought that counts. Handcrafted picture frames containing sentimental photos, a flower vase with your mother's favorite flowers, or even a scrap book could make lasting impacts on your mother this holiday season.

We Took Max To See The Bournemouth Lights

So I've previously written about how I have been to see the Make It Bournemouth garden of lights. We decided we would head down one day after Scott finished work to show Max just how wonderful they are. Personally I think they are amazing for kids as each one is really sensory and is pretty educational as it teaches them about colours, reactions and most of all magic!

The secret house was one of Max's favourites by far. Not only because he got to run in there and hide from mummy and daddy but because it feels like a world trapped inside a kitchen cupboard. The use of the mirrors creates the idea of infinite space and the kids love the idea that they are in a different place altogether!

Max's other favourite was definitely the one in the top photo, he spent ages running through the wall of lights and swishing the about to see what would happen. The fact they were fibre optic meant that I didn't have to worry about him hurting himself and by the looks of things all the other kids loved it too!

I'm still trying to work out exactly how the one on the left works. It seemed that the projection looked really geometric and it entranced Max to no end anyway.

The disco ball hut was amazing as the music was playing, the lights were going and the kids could really dance and watch the lights bouncing off the mirror balls into the room. It was fantastic to watch Max's eyes light up!

The Garden of Lights is open until the beginning of January, it's a fantastic place not just for kids but adults too. But the kids seem to understand the magic that Make it Bournemouth have created a bit more!

Fri-Dad

Hey everybody, December is upon us, the nights are getting longer and the temperature is dropping. Uplifting I know. Well this weeks post is food for thought.

I recently saw a friend post out about parenthood and how it affects friendships. They were explaining that since having children they don't necessarily have that lifestyle that friends without kids have. You prioritise differently, time schedules are pointless and your days are filled with watching Peppa Pig and the cbeebies programs (unless you own sky or virgin of course, then you can change it frequently).

The thing is we all know that this was coming. It's near impossible to balance your social life with parent life. It's too exhausting and your attitude to things change a little. Suddenly partying isn't as cool as it looks. You long that young carefree lifestyle your others friends live and envy the fun you think they must have.

What I think gets overlooked is enjoying and embracing parenthood with other parents. Parenting can feel like solitude if you are alone and sometimes you do feel like you need to stay confined. The thing is it's not true, you're not the only parent about and your child is probably capable of socialising themselves.

Parent friendships can spark nearly anywhere: it can be nursery and play school, stay and plays, soft play areas, parent and toddler events...even on days out. It's strange befriending new people, especially if like me you're younger than a lot of parents and your only initial point of contact is your children get along. There is a barrier I feel in people that it's too informal to make friendships like that. After meeting and greeting other parents at parks, nurseries and play areas I've realised there's little need to feel uptight.

The one thing I take great comfort in is how social and interesting my son can be to other kids and parents. He made friends at nursery and because of it gave us chances to meet other parents and talk about things adults do. Max made one friend from nursery who we have kept in touch with nearly a year separated from nursery. The boys parents are much older than us and have very different lives, but they're just fantastic company and great to just catch up with after a busy week. On top of that, their son is absolutely wonderful.

It's friendships made like that and making the effort to socialise that makes a difference both to my sons well being and mine. I urge anybody who does feel a little distant having children and doesn't venture to parent and child events to take that step. It's a tough step, don't get me wrong, but showing your face regularly, giving your child something fun and new to do will eventually get you meeting familiar faces.

Sure, those days going out and not having to sit through children's tv were great, but that was great. The quality time you get to spend with parents and their children is never alone and can lead to some very wonderful friendships.

That's it for today, but I shall be at the pbloggers discussion Sunday. If I go quiet, it will be because I'm flitting between NFL and this and NFL would be winning.

As always, have a great weekend!

Max is now 3!

So on Sunday Max turned 3! I still can't believe he isn't a baby anymore. We decided to have a small party for 3 of his friends, some babies and the parents at our favourite not so soft play Treehouse Family Play.

I love this place and so do the kids so we knew it would be a hit. We got given the mezzanine level for the party which meant we had a whole section to ourselves, the babies could nap and the parents could natter whilst the kids happily played inside.

They had decorated the place beautifully with balloons, bright colours and enough space for me to squeeze the party bags (filled with cute toys and keyrings rather than chocolate and sweets) on the shelves.

Our wonderful friend Loti made him a cake with loads of layers, gooey chocolate centre and bright blue! Max's favourite. They ate their weight in food and played to their hearts content. The great thing about treehouse is that it has a relaxed atmosphere and it's small enough that the kids are confident to go on their own at times. Having said that, the dads did enjoy it just as much as the kids did! In fact we heard tales from the kids of the dad's starting a soft ball war against each other...!

This is Max and his best friend Kayden. Unfortunately they don't go to the same nursery anymore as we moved but we try and see them as much as possible as these kids are as thick as thieves. I can safely say that the kids loved it and so did the parents. Treehouse were really great and allowed us to stay for an extra 45 minutes to play with no added charge, helped us wrap the cake and made sure that we were always taken care of and happy! I highly recommend it there if you can venture that way.

Eggs Glorious Eggs. Recipe and Giveaway

I'm not the best chef when it comes to eggs. To be frank I'm not a fan too much as I always get scared I will over or under cook them. Having said that when we do cook eggs we always make sure that the British Lion is stamped on them. That makes sure that we know that they are free from salmonella and produced to a high standard.

Last year alone the UK ate around 31 million eggs. So here is a great recipe for you to contribute to your share of the millions of eggs eaten!

Cheeseburger topped with a poached egg.

Ingredients:
1 egg per burger
Burger buns
Burger patties
Cheese
Salt and pepper to season.

Method:
  1. Add water to a pan and bring it to the boil
  2. Whilst the water is boiling, lightly oil a pan and start to grill or fry the burgers, turning frequently.
  3. Grate or slice some cheese to top the burger.
  4. When the water is boiled, turn down the heat slightly so that it is just below boiling.
  5. Slowly and gently crack the eggs into the water, using a spoon ease the whites closer to the yolk.
  6. Pop a lid on the pan, turn off the heat and leave it for 3-4 minutes.
  7. Place the burger on the bun with some cheese on top.
  8. When the eggs are white gently use a slotted spoon to scoop them out and top the burger with them.

We served ours with wedges and a side salad but it works really well with spinach, veg and just about any accompaniment. The boys love the different flavours and textures and it tastes divine!
