Max met McFly again!

My kid seems to be cooler than anyone I know recently! Thanks to a friend who probably knows far too much we headed back down to the place we saw them last to see if we could meet them again.
Max was so well behaved and really polite with them all, asking where the others were, for their autographs and for cuddles. He's over the moon!

Now to try and keep on top of all the reblogs and attention these photos seem to be getting haha.

Butlins Entertainment

When you think of Butlins, the first thing that comes to mind is entertainment. The Redcoats getting everyone excited for the day and so many things you don't know where to begin. This holiday was no exception.

The entertainment is split into a few areas. In the Skyline you have the Skyline stage where most of the children's entertainment is held, behind that is the Castle Courtyard where you can catch wonderful puppet shows. The other end of the Skyline houses Centre Stage, where the big entertainment, tributes and shows happen. And finally there is the Character Theatre where smaller shows happen (there is a charge for these)

Having a toddler meant that we spent most of the time in the Character Theatre, Centre Stage and Skyline Stage. But we didn't scrimp on entertainment at all. In fact we saw so much of it that in all honesty we lost track by the end of the week!

The Skyline hosted most of Max's favourite shows. We spent our time either sat on the floor where the kids are encouraged to join in with the help of the Redcoats, or sat a bit further back depending on what time we turned up. Some of our favourites here were Barney, Fireman Sam and Mike the Knight. But the wake up with Billy and Bonnie sure got the blood pumping on a mid week morning! The way it is set out means that most children and parents can see the stage as it's slightly staggered in height so that the little ones don't end up on shoulders or stood on tables. Having said that it does get very busy, and for a mid week, term time break we were surprised at how many people were there.

Centre Stage hosted some amazing shows in the evenings. From Freddie Mercury tributes to the Big Redcoat Gameshow it was a barrel of laughs most nights. We would always head down after dinner with our buggy and Max in his PJ's and a jumper. This meant that when he was tired we could get him to sleep in the buggy whilst we enjoyed a bit more of the entertainment. Having said that by the third night we were shattered and in bed by 10:00! One thing that bugged me a bit was that the tributes were never on until close to 10pm meaning that we had to stay up late to see them when we knew that Max would always be up bright and early.

Centre Stage featured the big family show of the week. Scooby Doo. To say we are a bit Scooby nuts in this house is an understatement. We have the DVD's on repeat and are always using catchphrases that are frankly embarassing for us parents to say out loud. The show was magnificent. Max was captivated, his eyes never left the stage. It's one that we nearly saw twice in one night (if our dinner wasn't booked for the second showing!) we loved it that much. It's a credit to the whole team for capturing such an amazing show on stage.

Finally we headed to Character Theatre. These tickets were £5 each, so pricey if you have a big family. But considering all the other shows were free, it was worth it. We saw the Big Little Adventure, which took two Redcoats across many lands to meet different characters you might well recognise in search of their missing rucksack. Max loved it, the theatre setting is perfect for introducing kids to the theatre environment at a low price whilst entertaining them with characters you all love (who doesn't love Fireman Sam!)

With so much to see at Butlins we could only just fit it all in. I know that if we go back again then we will make sure that we fully plan everything ahead of time so we don't miss out on one thing! Having said that we managed to be surprised by so many things that we stumbled upon.

Pirate Gran- Poole Lighthouse

We are massive theatre geeks in this house, and when we got asked if we wanted to go and see Pirate Gran of course we jumped at the opportunity. Max has seen theatre pretty much his whole life, starting from appearing in it at 6 months old all the way up to watching performances at Butlins. The stage is captivating for him and to add some visuals and music to it is even better.

Personally I think that theatre is something that more children should get involved with. It helps with imagination, creativity and skills that normally get shoved behind academics, even at a young age.

Pirate Gran is based on the book of the same name and tells the tale of dear old gran. You would have never guessed that under all the baking and knitting she's a pirate through and through. When the grandkids (or should that be grandpirates) beg her to take them to the pirate equivalent of the olympics you know that fun things will happen.

Did I forget to mention that Gan has a pet called Nipper? He's a bit of a nibbler. He's also a crocodile!

This show was amazing. A cast of 4, minimal set that worked as multiple props and audience participation always makes for an interesting show and this was just that. Max was roaring with laughter and squealing at every moment, whilst me and Scott chuckled along with the jokes that parents found just as funny for different reasons.

The set was fantastic, one back board and some multi-purpose furniture made this a great show that kids and adults find fascinating. The hour that it was on for shot by in the blink of an eye and has me begging to go to more theatre soon!

Butlins Ambassadors: Ocean Hotel & It's Facilities

As a Butlins Ambassador for this year we went on a magical trip. One we won't forget in a hurry. We have been to Butlins before in September and loved it, but this trip was something different. We were staying at the other end of the budget spectrum. Experiencing the amazing service from the butlers and the wonderful delights our hotel had to offer!

We stayed in the Ocean Hotel, it's their most premium hotel with a spa, butlers and a designated car park. To say we were impressed was an understatement. We don't really stay in many plush hotels, normally because it's too expensive and we would rather spend our money on excursions. However on this occasions I was so surprised that Butlins could impress us with this space.

The hotel room included a kids room with twin beds, an awesome built in DVD player and wall decals that Max was begging to have for home. Then a bathroom with mood changing lights, waterfall shower and some gorgeous toiletries. Then it led through to the main room. A massive bed with faux leather headboard, mood changing lights, tv, sofa and vanity table with coffee facilities. Opening to a gorgeous balcony with views across the whole of Butlins. We didn't want to go home really!

Once we got ourselves settled we headed down to the ground floor to book our meals with the Butlins Butlers. They are on hand to help with everything from excursions to dinners and will go above and beyond what you expect butlers to do. We decided that we wanted to try and eat in as many places as possible so they helped us by picking suitable times and places for all of us. We also decided to book an extra show and they managed to secure us the tickets immediately without having to worry too much about it selling out. We aren't very demanding people so we didn't use and abuse them but they are so lovely they needed a mention!

We had an evening meal in the Kaleidoscope restaurant, which is based inside the Ocean hotel. This was great as we needed an extra seat at the table which was swiftly taken care of. It's an all you can eat buffet which was great as Max is picky at the best of times and Scott loves variety on his plate. So he got to fill up on yummy curry and roast dinners whilst me and Max tucked into pasta and sausages.

Breakfasts at the Ocean are just as yummy, with a choice of continental or cooked, it's another buffet which allowed us to fill up on food before a big day ensuring that we didn't actually snack much throughout the day at all!

*Note we are Butlins Ambassadors, this was a free holiday in return for my honest reviews.

The Fault In Our Stars Signed Book Giveaway.

Everyone has those books they love, the ones that make the laugh, cry and want to shout from the rooftops simultaneously. This book is definitely one of them.

The Fault In Our Stars is a tale of a young girl named Hazel and a boy named Gus. It might sound like the everyday love stories we read but the two lovers are actually teens with cancer. It doesn't sound like a book that will fill you with all the emotions I described but when it has sold millions of copies there must be something special about it.

The Fault In Our Stars has risen to be one of the best selling books of the past few years, hitting number 1 on most bestseller charts and making the author John Green the voice of this generations young adult fiction. Something that I would have to agree with.

I could rave about this book for weeks, but I would probably bore you or I would spoil the story for you. Neither of which is nice really. But I will say this book is up there in my top 5, and has been since the moment I picked it up in 2012 (yep, that's how long it's been out for!).

Not only is the book fantastic, next month it will be released as a film. Featuring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as Hazel and Gus, the trailer is the highest viewed trailer on YouTube and will make you cry (it made me bawl!)

If you haven't guessed I am a massive John Green fan, a self confessed nerdfighter (Green and his brother Hank have a series of Vlogs and channels, most notably Vlogbrothers) and someone that persuades people to read his books on a daily basis. That's why I'm doing this giveaway. I've not been sent the book to giveaway, nor have I been paid for this praise.

So up for grabs, one RED (yes red, this is limited edition) SIGNED (oh yeah it's a signed book!) clothbound copy of The Fault In Our Stars for one of you lucky readers to devour before the film is released.

Sun dad!

A very belated hello again. All I can do is apologise, dad things and job things took over for the time being that I missed all my deadlines.

As parents we do ask for a lot of leniency with deadlines. In ways, we are a little entitled to some flexibility. Most tasks in life demand juggling between parenthood and, well, everything else. Even then, time is lost and important things slip your mind. I believe we deserve some forgiveness for some mistakes we make.
What I've done is compiled a list of a few things I believe we deserve some forgiveness for. Feel free to chip in if things are forgotten:

1) Being late to anywhere ever - because no matter how much time you give yours to be on time, kids know how to just eat it all up.

2) Missed calls - Because if you didn't let your child watch that video one more time, you would be living with tinnitus.

3) Not going to see that thing that everyone messaged you to say 'you've got to go see it!' - Sure, let me just pop that in my invisible diary and contact that imaginary babysitter that is always so available...well, guess I'll find out what happened when you all post it on social media! It's like I already watched it.

4) Having a messy place - Because your place has a top speed of 0-ruined in 60 seconds with damage you can measure in price.

5) Laying down ground rules to visitors - Yes, I would like you to take your shoes off in our place and no sweets in the house for a peace of mind you would not understand.

6) Language restraints - I don't want my child repeating these things in an open environment, so yes that's a big fucking no to your language!

7) My child having a temper tantrum - Yes, I have tried making them quiet, sorry for my child having an opinion and personality. No, I don't need your advice, you were the same at that age, so show some humility.

8) Banning food and drinks from my child - If you want to know how I feel about you drunkenly offering my child the dregs from your beer bottle, please identify the daggers from my eyes drawing ever closer to your FACE!

9) Tiredness - If only I could show you the night I had to accept your snide remark about looking tired. Don't make me go full Hulk on your life.

10) Zoning out - It's hard to care a lot about whatever you just said without knowing whatever I'm returning home to.

11) Forgetfulness - In cases of what was just said, birthdays, names, my children refer to number 10.

And finally...

12) Not apologising - You know what? Judge how you will! You may be policed by small minded things, but what I do have amongst my trials and tribulations is a happiness you simply cannot fathom. I love my life, I'm proud of my child(ren) and I may not be perfect, but I'm doing a heck of a job and there's nothing you can do to break my will.

I hope this makes up for the missing posts. Stay well, stay positive and most of all, enjoy yourselves.

The Butlins Diner.

Butlins always have something new up their sleeve to impress their customers with and this gem is no exception. Nestled away from the Skyline Pavilion is a gorgeous 50's inspired diner. One where you go in there and feel like you have been transformed into Grease characters.

We slid into a booth and browsed a menu full of burgers, hot dogs and ice cream milkshakes. Let's just say there is no scrimping on the milkshakes, they are divine and so wonderful! The walls are plastered in iconic photos and gorgeous graphics reminding us that we are in a fun place that is full of great things.

The food is filling, great tasting and comes served in baskets filled with fries and salad. Price wise the dishes range from £6 up to £12 depending on what you want to indulge on. We went for hot dogs which fell in the £7 price range, for the price you got more than enough for your buck! Soft brioche buns and smothered in sauce you want to inhale it because it tastes so good!

Once we stuffed ourselves silly we realised that we didn't want any puds but they all sounded amazing. We settled on a compromise. For less than £2 you can pick up this adorable egg cup profiterole, a single cream filled bun profiterole with a drizzle of chocolate sauce served in an egg cup that you get to take home with you after! Yep you get a souvenir with your dinner, you heard it here first.

One thing I haven't mentioned yet that is better than the food and the gorgeous venue...The AMAZING singing waitresses. Every 20-30 minutes the lights change, the jukebox rocks and it's time for the amazing girls (and guys) to take to the floor and serenade us with their amazing voices and dance moves.

Max fell in love with one of the gorgeous girls, blowing her kisses and dancing with her, begging us to return each night; we didn't to his dismay. Twirling in the fab frocks (that my carry on family actually made for them!) you get swept up in the moment and forget you are on a holiday resort, in the 21st century.

If you are heading to Bognor Butlins then please make this one food trip you will make. I promise you that you won't be disappointed.

Forest Days

Coming back from holiday, we really needed a day to wind down. So we packed the new car up and headed towards the forest. We love going to the forest but always forget that it's now on our doorstep since we moved.

We took a bug hunting kit and went on a rummage. We had so much fun just disconnecting from the world and going into our own bubble. We even found a rope swing to play on!

#morrisonsmum and Britmums

This bank holiday weekend we were set a challenge by Britmums and Morrisons to see what we could serve up with some vouchers they sent us.

Morrisons have recently slashed their prices on everyday items from bread rolls to bacon. These aren't short term offers either, they are here to stay! So when I turned up to mu local Morrisons I was really surprised about the amount that we could actually get for our money. In fact we went back several times over the weekend as we just couldn't spend the vouchers all in one go! Normally our weekly shop is about £40 but surprisingly we managed to whittle it down to £30 so will definitely be going there for the basics and treats.

We loved having a great chat with the fishmonger who helped us work out how much we would need for our recipe and what fish was best to use. I never knew that the staff were so knowledgable and the guys on the checkouts even joked around with Max which is a bonus for me as he get's so bored shopping normally!

We originally had planned for a picnic with our parent friends but due to illness and other plans things got changed so me and Max decided to make a great treat for us whilst daddy was at work so he could have some when he got back!

Mamas fish bites with chips and peas
(to feed 3 people)

200g fresh cod pieces
3 slices of day old bread
1 egg
salt

In a bowl beat the egg.
Whizz up the breadcrumbs with a blender and pop in a big bowl with a bit of salt.
Preheat the oven to 200 degrees and add the oven chips in.
Take a fish piece, dip in the egg until it's liberally coated and then do the same in the breadcrumbs.
Pop onto a tray and continue until it has all been coated.
Add to the oven for 12-15 minutes until the fish is flaky in the middle.

Serve with chips and peas. Max had a dollop of ketchup whilst I had some tartare sauce. Max loved coating the fish himself and was so proud of the pieces he did that he couldn't wait to eat it all up. It's one of the first meals that he inhaled without prompting. They are also so easy to make too meaning we can whip a batch up in 10 minutes ready for dinner!

The costing was: £1.80 for the fish, 10p for the egg, 5p for the bread, 70p for the chips and 30p for the peas (this was a rough estimate based on the portions of the packets we used) so for under £3 for 3 people it is a fantastic dish made of fresh fish and veg.

We also made our favourite dessert...Eton Mess! We have a bit of an obsession with strawberries and mixed with cream and meringue is the best of everything sweet and fruity. Perfect for a bank holiday weekend as one batch lasts us a few days.

We had a great weekend not only stuffing our faces but spending time together at the local fete and visiting family. We hope you had a fabulous bank holiday weekend too!

Disclosure: we were sent the vouchers for review purposes.

On Struggling.

I don't really know how to write this. Any other time I have spoken about my emotions it has always been reflecting on them rather than in the midst of them. But I felt like I needed to write them down somewhere and then remembered that's what my blog is for.

As some of you know our situation isn't ideal. We are currently in part time work, living at my mums and trying to scrape enough money together to get a rental deposit somewhere. One of us needs a full time job though. Working less than 30 hours a week between us doesn't really bring in the big bucks and with a car that seems to die every month we always seem to have a set back. We can't afford to live down here without a full time wage as for some reason the benefit office hates us.

On the exterior I can do a really good job at holding it all together. Inside however I have no idea what's going on. Ashamed that I can't get a job, Frustrated that I'm back living with my mum when I never expected or wanted to do that. Saddened that I've not given my son a stable home that I wanted to provide him with.

Not knowing what's going to happen each month, worrying about the smallest thing is really affecting us. Scott's in a writing funk, I'm an insomniac with horrendous migraines and Max seems to have fallen out of the great routine he was in as he doesn't seem to know what's going on.

I know the saying is the only way is up, but at the moment the climb seems pretty far to go. Fingers crossed that all our hopes and prayers get answered! And if anyone knows any full time jobs in Southampton then let us know!

FriDad

Hello FriDay and hello FriDad.

This week, I'm following on from last weeks post about moving forward and following up goals for the future.

This week is about motivation, the drive to keep the dream alive. For some of you this post may mean little as drive doesn't need fuelling. I do feel though, for some parents especially first timers it can be tough to conjure.
When I first had Max I was so focused on being a dad, I didn't focus on much else. I was so busy trying to be the best dad I could I paid little attention to my life.
Returning to Uni. all I wanted to do was not fail, which was really the wrong attitude. I didn't fail my first year, so I needn't have worried.
Now out of Uni. and with no plans, I have to build from what I have.
So I'd like to give a little food for thought. If there is something you wish you could do or have a new goal then here are a few ideas to get you motivated:

Put a plan together: Not every dream is ready for take off, it needs a direction, sacrifices and a time scale. Spend a little time with yourself and think about where you are, where you want to be and find out makes you want to change circumstances. Once you have figured the best way for you to get there, write it down. Keep it to yourself though, it's okay to talk about it after, but don't add pressure from expectations or seeking approval. The only approval you need is your own.

Keep at it: If the time scale has to be compromised, just chip away at it, any way you can. Progress needs to remain and saves procrastination. The progression will keep you fuelled. Don't quit either, results don't always show straight away but they will if you keep at it.

Reward accomplishments: the road is always tough and tiring. Give yourself a chance to recognise your successes.

Enjoy time away from work: Work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. When you're not working, take the time to keep enthusiastic. Enjoy time with the kids, family and friends. If you bog yourself down and focus too hard, it can wear you out.

And most importantly...

Believe: Believe it's going to happen, believe it can be done, believe that it is achievable. You may be the only person cheering yourself on, some may know what you're up to and tell you what they think, but it's your life. You know the benefits, you know what will be best. By all means heed valuable advice, but, ignore the bullshit. You can get there and you will. Sometimes heeding your own advice can be difficult (for me it is) but it's doable.

I wish you all the best on your journeys. Feel free to add your own thoughts and advice.
Enjoy your bank holiday weekends!
