Why We Are Not Having Another Child.
Monday, 29 June 2015
We never expected to have Max when we did. I don't think anyone expected it. We were young, still in uni and had barely known each other a year. But we honestly wouldn't change it for the world.
That doesn't stop us getting the "when are you going to have another" from every Tom, Dick and Harry. We get told that we are young and there is plenty of time for another. But honestly, I know in my heart that I don't want to add another member to our party of three.
Max is nearly 5 now. He's going to go to school, we're going to have the chance to start our careers. Loads of our friends left uni and went into great paying jobs in the big city, internships around the world and we seem to be that step ahead of them career wise. I'm not saying that I resent Max for holding us back, in fact the contrary. Having Max has left us more determined, we aren't ones to fritter money away on silly things and not leaving jobs to fester. We know what we want and we know we need to work hard to get there.
He's one determined cookie. One that has known since he could speak he want's to be a rockstar. And let's be perfectly honest, teaching him all of that music, vocal and acting training isn't going to come cheap. I don't want to have loads of children and then have to hold them back because I can't afford to let them all thrive.
People keep telling us that Max is lonely on his own. I have to disagree, we have a great network of friends in the area. Family are all less than an hour away and his best friend of all is a 5 minute drive. Any time he does get on his own is time that he immerses himself in his favourite things; music, Lego, Scooby Doo and any other toys he might have. Making some amazing imaginary worlds.
I don't want another. I don't want to go through pregnancy, labour and the sleepless nights again. Not that my experience was a bad one, it's just one that I don't really want to repeat. Me and Scott agreed that if we were in a better financial position before Max started school then we would talk about it. But knowing we aren't any better off than we were a couple of years ago worries me that financially we wouldn't be able to cope either.
It might sound crazy but I love having just 1 child. We get to do loads of cool stuff together, I don't have to worry about keeping my eye on multiple small people and we feel like the strongest unit there is. That's not to say that people with big families are doing it wrong. Each family is different, the 2 kids and a dog scenario doesn't exist for everyone anymore. So that's why we are choosing to just have 1.
I didn't go to BritMums Live
Monday, 22 June 2015
This is a bit of a hard post to write. Not because of the title of the post but the reasons behind not going. I'm going to keep it brief and normal service will resume as soon as possible.
There was an accident. One that couldn't be stopped and no one is to blame. It resulted in Max having to go to hospital with some pretty painful burns. Since last week we've been in a whirlwind of hospital appointments, car journeys and sleepless nights.
Everything is okay, everyone is okay. Max is understandably sore but we've been told he's getting better faster than they all thought he would. He's still his happy, chirpy self that won't sit still for longer than 3 seconds and let's face it, he's loving the visitors and cuddles (and presents from Nanny).
Obviously it meant me missing BritMums Live. A wee bit gutted but my family come first. But don't fret. Me and my sponsors Blloon still have some amazing things lined up over the coming year.
#LifeInAHospital

Many of you will remember that last year I spoke of my friend Charlie. He has cystic fibrosis and wanted to busk the length of the UK to raise money and awareness for the CF Trust.
Unfortunately in the past 12 months he has been in hospital for a total of 7 of them. He is now on the transplant list meaning that the thought of busking the country is something that won't be happening for the time being.
Even though he has a 30% lung functionality and is waiting on a double transplant he wanted to do something to raise awareness. So he did the only thing he knew how, made a music video!
Life In A Hospital is a song about Charlie's own experience in the hospital that he calls home sometimes. It's a funny look at something that others would get hung up over. Charlie sees the best in each and every situation, no matter how rubbish. So I knew that this video and song would be amazing.
Don't believe me? Have a peek. And if you enjoy it then please share it!

Shoe Shopping with Brantano
Wednesday, 17 June 2015
Shoe shopping with Max can be a nightmare. He's either running around, bored or completely distracted to the point that I wish I had bought some shoes online. But with him starting school soon I knew that we all had to face our fear and pop into a shop to get him fitted and sorted with a pair of shoes that would be fit for school.
Luckily Brantano stepped in and saved our day! Brantano are one of the countries leading retailers for shoes. With their own fitting service in store, each employee is trained for each different brand that they stock to make sure that they will fit everyone's feet, from babies to grandparents. As soon as we walked in we were welcomed and asked what help we needed. After a fitting that was completely painless we decided to go rummaging.
We knew that we wanted to find Max a pair of shoes for school but were also advised that in the couple of months between now and then he could grow dramatically. So we opted to go up half a size meaning that they would hopefully fit him by September, and if they didn't then we could always pop in an insole (as the expert fitter advised). We were spoilt for choice with a range of brands from budget ones to Clarks, who are obviously at the higher end of the spectrum.

Luckily the shoes were set out across the shelves in size order meaning we could grab a box and try them on. It did limit what selection we had but it didn't bother us too much as it meant we weren't sat around waiting for the right sizes to be found.
The wonderful girl that helped us made it really special for Max. She let him run in the shoes, jump up and down and basically test them so that we were sure they would fit him well. In the end we went for a mid priced shoe (£20) and grabbed some waterproof spray that will protect them against the elements.
Thanks Brantano for making our shoe shopping experience that but easier! With such a great selection of shoes I know where we will be going from now on!
*Note we were given a free pair of shoes in return for this post, all views are our own.

DIY Geometric Canvas - Quick Craft
Tuesday, 16 June 2015
We always love a quick and easy craft in our house. One that Max can get messy in and I can try and do something interesting. So when I decided on a whim that we needed some new artwork in our flat I thought it was a perfect time to pull out the paints and get messy.
What you'll need:
- Canvas (we got ours from Home Bargains for £1.50)
- Masking tape
- Paints (we used cheap Tesco poster paints)
- Sponges (we bought a giant value brand one and cut into pieces)
How to do it:
Using the masking tape, mark off areas of the canvas in a geometric style pattern. We did the big lines first and then filled in with smaller stripes of masking tape so that there were triangles of different sizes.
We then used a standard blue colour to paint on the canvas. We used a sponge to get a great mottled effect but also gave an even coverage meaning it dried a bit quicker.
Once that was dry we added a lighter blue, then repeated it again with a purple and white to create a great blend of different colours.
When the entire painting was dry we slowly peeled off the masking tape revealing this great geometric pattern. We unfortunately had some bleeding from the paint but I think I just didn't take time to ensure the making tape was properly held down.
It creates a really cool and original painting and we are already planning our next one (I'm thinking of a chevron pattern as I'm slightly obsessed with chevron!)
King Of All Wild Things
Monday, 15 June 2015
When we were thinking up names for Max we kept on rushing back to books. Being a book addict it's kind of obvious we would get inspiration from there. But as soon as he was born I knew he was a Max. He just felt like a Max. But not just any Max, the king of all wild things Max. One that roared terrible roars and sailed to the land of the wild things. As he's grown up he's definitely lived up to his name, being full of energy and not stopping for anything.
When he was younger we bought him this gorgeous Max suit and he still just about squeezes into it (he's fast outgrowing the legs though!). One evening the sun was setting, we had just watched the film and I grabbed the opportunity to snap some shots of him in the forest near our house!
But the wild things cried "oh please don't go- I'll eat you up- I love you so"
Friday Reads: Oliver Jeffers - Lost and Found
Friday, 12 June 2015
There's something amazing about kids books. They take you far away into a world that you wouldn't ever experience with adults books. Picture books for example can evoke so much emotion from a series of pictures, that the words almost don't matter!
When I had Max I decided from the get go that he would be surrounded by books. It helps that I have a constant supply of amazing ones to choose from at work, but even if I didn't work where I do then I would still be buying books by the bucketload. It opens them up to a new world where their imaginations can run riot.
One of our favourite books and authors is Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers. It tells the story of a boy who finds a penguin. Obviously he assumes the penguin is lost and he needs to go home. But is that really where the penguin wants to be? It's a classic tale that tells the true meaning of friendship and that happiness can sometimes be found in the most unexpected places.
The illustrations are amazing and a perfect compliment to the story. It's such a well loved tale that it's even been turned into a short animation. One that even the most hardest of hearts will silently sob at through the musical short.
To celebrate our families love of this book we have decided to do a giveaway for a copy of it plus the DVD to go alongside. Be warned you may need a pack of tissues as there won't be a dry eye in the house! For your chance to win, just follow the Rafflecopter instructions below. Good luck!

Friday Reads - My To-Read Pile
Saturday, 6 June 2015
Being a bookseller and book addict means I have way too many books on my to-read pile. I normally have one stack next to my bed and make that a priority, especially if there are review books or ones that I need to read for work. Here's what's on there at the moment though.
- The Storm (Virginia Bergin) - The second part of an amazing series that I read last year. Ruby is a girl stranded in the middle of an apocalypse, she's not to go out in the rain or it will kill her. But you need to find a way to survive and this is the next chapter in her story. I'm so excited for this book. It's been on my to-read pile for a while as I've had so many other things to read, but It's definitely next on the list.
- Under My Skin (James Dawson) - I have to admit I'm new to James Dawson and his amazing writing skills. This book tells the tale of Sally, a girl who doesn't realise that a tattoo isn't the only thing that can get really get under your skin. I read his book "Say Her Name" and absolutely adored it so I can't wait to jump on this one.
- Asking For It (Louise O'Neill) - This dropped into my lap this week and I am so so excited to dive into it. Many of you know I was a massive fan of her first book "Only Ever Yours" and this follows a similar dark turn into the way society perceives everyone. I can guarantee you a review will be up before the September release!
- The Rest Of Us Just Live Here (Patrick Ness) - Patrick Ness is an amazing writer, winning every kids book award you can think of. Mikey is a boy who just want's to graduate and go to prom before someone blows up the high school again. But there's something bigger going on. The end of the world is this week and if you aren't chosen then no-one knows what will happen. I am really looking forward to this one.
- We Are All Made Of Molecules (Susin Nielsen) - Stewart is a geeky, socially awkward guy who's mum has passed away. Ashley is cool and popular but failing school, her dad has left them. But their worlds collide when their parents get together. This one seems like such a great funny tale about a slightly dysfunctional family. Something I can't wait to read.
So that's what's on my list, what's on yours?
We Love Miffy!
Tuesday, 2 June 2015
This year Miffy turns 60 (on the 21st June to be exact!). It's hard to believe that a little bunny has reached the grand old age of 60, but she looks better than ever! To celebrate, Miffy and her friends have released a brand new set of books and products to capture the hearts of a new audience. I absolutely adore the books and get thrilled every time I suggest them to customers at work.
I have become a Miffy Mum this year to help celebrate the wonderful world of this little Dutch rabbit. We've been sent a wonderful selection of Miffy products to help us celebrate including this amazing book.
Max has been going through a proper boy phase recently. He can't get enough of superheroes and disgusting things, but when we started reading this book he fell in love with the simple characters and story. So much so that he is now reading it to us! Miffy is one of those amazing universal characters that no matter what age or gender, you fall in love with.
We love miffy, and the new range of books and products introduces a timeless classic to audiences around the country. I think we've gone a bit Miffy mad in our home, but there's nothing wrong with that!
Moors Valley
Monday, 1 June 2015
Last week I headed to Moors Valley for a morning of fun and games with some of my fellow mum bloggers (Jeni, Emma, Amy, Alice and Claire) and all our kids.
Moors Valley is one of our favourite local places it go. It's a country park that is full of play trails, steam trains, play areas and places to explore. It's free to attend, but you must pay for parking. It cost up £8 for 4 hours, which might seem a lot but in reality would have cost us more in town or at a soft play. Whenever we go, we always try and pick something new to do. This time though we stuck to the trusty play trail as we knew all the kids would enjoy it!
We all packed our own picnics and had a great time chatting and catching up along the way whilst the kids raced ahead. It was great to see them all interacting with each other and playing together, despite the age differences.
We all settled down at one of the massive picnic benches that they have to eat. One thing to note is that there are no bins at Moors Valley. Bins tend to overflow quickly (it's a massive park which would take hours for someone to empty the bins) and also attract animals such as flies and foxes, which whilst they are great in our environment, doesn't provide an attractive play space. This means that it's wise to take a carrier bag for rubbish to take home.
We had to leave the other's early as we had work/preschool to go to but we can't wait to go back for another play!
