My 2015: in review

2015 has definitely been one of those mixed years. It started off on a high. Work was great, the blog was great and we were really strong as a family. We had a great holiday at Butlins and got to meet the wonderful McFly boys on more than one occasion (props to how amazing they are with Max!)

When June struck we had a bit of a change in luck. Max ended up hospitalised after a collision with a slow cooker and after an operation that terrified us he began the slow and steady process of healing the multiple burns he got. To say he was brave through it all was an understatement. He's shown us just how strong a little man he is and all I can do is thank the amazing staff at Salisbury burns unit and Nix his amazing outreach nurse.

September was a massive month for us. Max started school and is thriving and loving it more than we could expect. I also joined the Young Women's Trust. A charity aimed at supporting young women and trying to combat the in exhaling they face in work, education and life. It's so amazing to be surrounded by these inspirational women that I can't actually wait to see them all again in March!

We've had plenty of wonderful experiences this year. From theatre visits to trips away. It's been wonderful to grab those little moments when we can and make the most of them. We've made some amazing new friends in the parents at Max's school and the kids have just blended together into one group.

Looking forward to 2016 I know it's going to be filled with love and laughter. I've got a social media training course to start, Scott's looking to develop his screenwriting, Max is still as determined as ever to be on the stage in some way. We have a wonderful trip to the Harry Potter Studio Tours to plan with the Castle clan, a zipwire adventure to watch as my mum and her partner fly across the Bournemouth Pier and hopefully a weekend away to London planned so we can show Max the sights.

2016 is also going to be the year of goodbyes. My brother and his girlfriend will be leaving for Australia and my mum and her partner moving to Tenerife. It's going to be a strange year but with Scott and Max by my side we can achieve anything we want!

Our Christmas 2015

I have to admit I didn't have time to think about Christmas. I spent the two weeks before hand working ungodly hours at work to try and get things looking somewhat tidy. I came home aching and stressed from exhaustion and went to sleep and did it all over again. But come Christmas Eve when I got in the car and drove to Portsmouth I knew it would be worth it. I had 4 days off and I couldn't wait.

Working in retail means that having time off over Christmas is non existent but luckily for us the way the days fell meant we had more than 1 day to spend with our loved ones. I could put to the back of my head all the abuse customers gave me for things being out of stock and all the times I wanted to tear my hair out when a kid knocked over a whole display of books.

This year we spent Christmas in Portsmouth. The boys headed down a few days earlier and I followed on Christmas Eve once I had finished my shift. As soon as I got there I was handed a drink, told to put my feet up and relax. It's all you really want at Christmas. It was magical to snuggle down with Max and read some stories as he fell asleep next to me, putting out milk and biscuits and seeing Max's face when Santa left some footprints behind!

I can honestly say we were spoilt rotten, some kitchen appliances that I'm already obsessed with, tickets to Harry Potter Studios and a Vtech Smartwatch which hasn't left Max's wrist. It was lovely to spend Christmas day with the inlaws having a quiet day.

Boxing day however was the complete opposite! All the family over, drinks, games and laughter galore. I've not cried laughing so much for such a long time! I sometimes find it hard to relax when we visit the inlaws as normally we are only there for a day and I'm driving us home so it was nice to know that we had some time to unwind.

Sunday was a day of rest. Having a lazy meal out with Scott and playing with Max's toys. It was a wonderful Christmas had by all and perfect to unwind after such a stressful few weeks at work. Now to get ready for school!

Christmas Spectacular - Regent Centre, Christchurch

We've done a fair few Christmas shows this year and thought that the last one should end with a bang. Which is why we picked to see Christmas Spectacular at the Regent Centre in Christchurch.

The Glad Rag production company have been putting the Christmas Spectacular on at the Regent Centre for the past 3 years and sold out nearly every show they've done.

Each show is a magical adventure in the North Pole and this years was no exception. It took us on a journey to Christmas Eve, where all Santas helpers were trying to get as much done as they could without disturbing the man himself. They all declared that he looked a bit tired at 403 years old and could do with putting his feet up.

What happens next is a wonderful story of slapstick comedy from the entertaining elves, gorgeous dancing from the girls and scrumptious singing that could get any grumpy Scrooge into the Christmas spirit.

There was a great mix of traditional Christmas hits that we could sing along to and other songs that you wouldn't expect to fit (but surprisingly lend themselves to Christmas). And there was a great balance of music and acting meaning that Max was always captivated by the stage.

Despite this being in a relatively small theatre it has the feel of a massive stage show. Everyone is well cast and the children that form the younger part of the cast were incredibly professional on stage! Max is desperate to get up there one year himself.

Max loved the elves most of all, there was some great audience interaction where you have to shout when you see the polar bears which Max did with glee! Hats off to The head elves for keeping all the kids thoroughly entertained. I could certainly hear a lot of giggles coming from the seats.

Christmas Spectacular is on at the Regent Centre until Christmas Eve and there are still tickets available (but going fast!). It's a lovely show that will certainly leave you in the Christmas spirit! Tickets are available from the Regent Centre directly.

We've seen an amazing array of shows this year which have all been wonderful with something different for all the family, so your guaranteed to find one that's just right for you!

Mo's Cookie Dough

Who doesn't love cookies? We are always baking cookies or cakes in our house at weekends to share with friends and family. But sometimes we find that we don't have enough flour, or the mixture doesn't stay right. That's where Mo's Cookie Dough comes in.

Mo's Cookie Dough is an amazing pre-made dough that is either popped in the fridge or frozen that you can just slice and bake. It takes out all the messy mixing and any chances of getting it wrong and leaves you with warm and delicious cookies that are ready in minutes.

Mo's Cookie Dough started when Morag (the founder) became so well known for her almost instantly made, gorgeous cookies amongst her friends and family. Her secret was rolls of frozen cookie dough she had made that she then sliced and popped in the oven whenever she needed it. She's now brought out her line of 3 different flavours for the whole world to enjoy!

We loved making these cookies. With the winter weather coming in, there's nothing better than curling up on the sofa with a batch of cookies and a Christmas movie. Unfortunately mummy burnt the Chocolate Chip cookies a little bit (I blame the oven rather than my own cooking) but nevertheless they tasted gorgeous and were a massive hit.

Max and Scott cooked a batch of the gingerbread cookies and took them into school for Max to hand out to his classmates. We adapted the mix slightly by slicing into smaller bits and then adding some crushed candy canes to the top to give it a festive feel. He felt so proud handing them out and the mums were amazed that my secret was actually a roll of Mo's delicious mix!

Finally, I used the oat and raisin one to create the perfect elevenses. Max's school had a Santa visit helped by the PFA and I rustled up some cookies for us to have as a snack to keep us all going. They even got the big mans approval with I think is a big thumbs up.

Thank you Mo's for letting us share the secret of your glorious cookie dough. I think it's found it's way into our freezer for life whenever we need a scrummy pick me up.

Otto and the Robin - Lighthouse Poole.

Christmas is a magical time of year. So what better way than to get in the festive spirit than to see a show. The Lighthouse in Poole are always putting on wonderful shows and this Christmas is no different. To run alongside Peter Pan (their main Christmas show) they have also commissioned Otto and the Robin

Otto and the Robin is an interactive show aimed at the under-8's and is set in the gloriously Dorset sounding town of Piddle Under Puddle. As you enter the theatre all the children are given invites to the big Christmas party at the village hall. The party is organised by Maggie, she's the life and soul of the village and loves nothing more than a good party. And everyone is going to be there! Everyone except Otto that is.

Otto is a man that is overwhelmed by shyness. He can't bear to leave his cottage or even open his door or answer his phone. With a drawer stuffed full of invitations he's come to accept the fact he will always be too shy to join in. That is until he meets a robin who changes everything.

This show is fantastic. The audience engagement is spot on and really draws the crowd in. From dancing to shouting and casting magic spells it really keeps them engaged. Which is hard to do when there's an audience of little kids. The puppetry of the robin is gorgeous, and the way they use the studio space to move through the audience means that we feel like we are part of the show. Max loved the fact he was asked to hang the bunting ready for the Christmas party and enjoyed giggling at the dad dancing Otto did.
If you're looking for a show to lift your Christmas spirits then this is the one. The charming play will leave you wishing that you could have your own robin to help you along the way. Otto and the Robin is on most mornings and afternoons between now and December 24th so don't miss out!

Just Another Manic Mumday with Toby Carvery

Weekdays are hectic for us mums. If we aren't running around after school doing some homework project we forgot about then we're trying to cook dinner whilst keeping tired kids awake long enough to give them some grub. Not only that but at the end of it we have to wash up, tidy the hurricane that the kids left behind and still find time for ourselves.

Toby Carvery have done some research and found that on average mums get up at 6:40am and don't get to sit down and relax until 8:00pm. For the Castle household that's even worse as Scott does the pick up, I finish work at 8pm and we normally don't crash on the sofa until at least 9/9:30pm. There just aren't enough hours in the day!

Fortunately for us Toby Carvery offered us a midweek meal so that we could have a moment to enjoy ourselves (and not have to do the washing up - YAY!). So once school had finished, we swiftly got Max changed and headed over to our local to see what they had in store for us.

The best thing about a midweek meal at Toby Carvery is the price. For a low price of £5.99 you get a fully cooked carvery with all the trimmings you could want. Without even having to lift your finger in the kitchen! With a selection of 4 different meats, as many veggies as you could wish for and a yorkshire pudding the size of Max's head there's so much to choose from and you are sure to leave fully satisfied. For the vegetarians and anyone that doesn't want a carvery, there is a great selection of other things on the menu too.

We all opted for the carvery. What I find most tricky about doing a roast at home is that everyone has different preferences. Max loves gammon with mash whereas Scott prefers beef with roasties. I can never end up pleasing everyone so coming to Toby Carvery means that everyone left happy as they got their favourites! Scott had a side of pork scratchings too as they're a favourite treat of his.

The meal itself was scrummy and filling. We all sat back at the end, took in our empty plates and agreed that we needed to do it more often. At less that £25 for all of us (excluding drinks) we couldn't have asked for a better meal. Max very rarely wolfs up a whole dinner after school but I've never seen him devour something so fast. I don't know if that says something about my cooking though!

It was so lovely to take time out of our manic midweek schedule and actually spend some time together laughing and joking and not having to worry about cooking times and tidying up. By the time we got home we cuddled up and watched a Christmas movie together without having hundreds of things on our mind.

Thank you Toby Carvery for saving my Manic Mumday and turning it into a wonderful time spent with my family. I urge all my readers to pop down and have their own manic mumday turned into a magical moment. And as a treat for you all, just use this QR code for a free Ice Cream sundae on us!

Peter Pan - Lighthouse Poole

There's nothing better to get you in the festive spirit than to go see a show. Each year since Max was little we've made a conscious decision to either see a panto, play or concert to get that festive feeling, and this year was no exception. We've packed this year with more Christmassy shows that I can count and this was the first, (and the one I was most excited about!) Peter Pan at the Lighthouse in Poole.

Let me start off by saying this isn't a panto, infact it's an amazing stage show with so many magical elements that will leave you forgetting the word panto even existed! I always love it when a theatre tries something a bit different and this was definitely different. As you sit down you are taken away by the amazing revolving stage that you see in front of you.

The story opens with the Darlings getting ready to go out and leaving their children with Nana the dog. The actors playing the children did an amazing job at capturing the individual personalities of the characters we know and love. When Peter Pan flies into their room to get his shadow back he takes them back to Neverland with him for adventures with mermaids and pirates.

Once in Neverland it continued the classic tale with dancing with Tiger Lily and her tribe to fighting with the pirates on their ship to avoid walking the plank. The staging is seamless and helps each scene move past quickly and with just a twist of the stage you are transported to another place.

I loved that even though it was a play and not a panto there were still great funny elements to it. From the pirates being scared of a mysterious noise to the crocodile scooting across the front of the stage when you least expected it. There were still enough laughs to keep the adults and children amused amongst the gorgeous songs and acting.

The casting was spot on. Christopher Ellison as the despicable Captain Hook getting the crowd booing at his dastardly ways (and Max shouting that he's a bad man!). Jamie Quinn was the magical Peter Pan who captured the hearts of everyone as he flew across the audience and convinced everyone he was a boy that really didn't want to grow up. To me the standout performance was definitely Naomi Morris who played Wendy, superb singing, amazing acting, she really stole the show for me.

If you're looking for a heartwarming show to get you into the festive spirit then I urge you to see Peter Pan at the Lighthouse. With elements that everyone in the family will love you'll be talking about it for days. Tickets are on sale now and the show is running until the 3rd January so don't miss out!

I was provided with complimentary tickets but all opinions are my own.

Things to see in Bournemouth this Christmas

We love Christmas in our house. Not only do we get to spend time together, buy gifts and see family, but there's always so much going on. I'm always a bit gutted when I realise things have happened and we missed the chance to see them. Here's some things happening in the Bournemouth and Poole area that aren't to be missed! I've we've headed down or been to watch it then I'll be sure to list the review's below.

Things To Do

What Max Wore

Now that Max is at school I don't get to do as many Instagram outfit posts as a school uniform is hardly a stylish thing. That's why I love the weekends as Max gets to pick his outfits and play about with what he loves to wear.

Max is a defiant little lion. He knows what he likes and will definitely be vocal if I try and pick his clothes for him. I swear I wasn't so style aware at his age! This weekend we went to Pompey to spend time with the in-laws as they didn't come to Max's birthday party. We had a great time and Max was thoroughly spoilt with some new joggers and slippers for lounging around in after school.

Max is obsessed with this jumper that his auntie Jess gave him for his birthday. He's dubbed it his "Bieber Jumper" as it's quite long in length like the ones Justin Bieber wears (yes I know!) He's also grown to carrying a bag all the time so he can pop his toy phone and fake laptop in there to "blog on the go". I'm raising a male fashion blogger it seems!

Jumper: Faded grey jumper from River Island
Jeans: Black super skinny jeans from Next
Trainers: Hoops by Adidas at Brantano
Bag: Dino Tote from Trunki

Baby Moo's Clothing & Shop

I love and loathe shopping for clothes for Max. On one hand he is so stylish he could pull off a bin bag but on the other it's so hard to find something different, something unique and something that makes him stand out a bit.

That's exactly how Anna felt when she decided to launch Baby Moo's. She was fed up of seeing the same stuff on the shelf so decided to make some quirky and individual baby and toddler products that parents would love as much as the kids.

She has done so well that she's decided to open a store in Southbourne, Bournemouth to sell her clothes physically as well as online. So we popped down to the shop to see what it was like. Let's just say it was pretty amazing.

There's everything from music related baby-gro's to bibs, hoodies and tops. There is literally something for everyone and I wandered around the shop pointing at stuff telling Scott that we should buy this for X,Y and Z for presents.

There's only a small selection for kids 3+ but it's something she is expanding on and there's already a few new designs online that I'm interested in!

We were kindly given the Superhero Hoodie to road test which is a perfect fit for us as Max is convinced he is a superhero in disguise. It's a perfect fit and a great design with a mask attached to the hood with poppers. We've had it for a couple of weeks now and the colour and design has lasted well in the wash and it's Max's go-to jumper. He even wore it for a non uniform day at school and we had many parents ask where we got it.

I love that it's a lightweight hoody so he can wear it with a thin top underneath. It's perfect for this weather as we love to layer them up and keep him warm. I would 100% recommend this hoodie for any superhero you may know, and at £13 is a perfect stocking filler for Christmas!

Note: We recieved the umper in exchange for a review but all opinions are our own.

Making Friends As A Mum

When Max started school I was really apprehensive. I've always found it tough to make mum friends outside of blogging as let's face it, we can all sympathise about press releases and juggling a full time hobby and kids. But knew I needed to push myself when it came to school gate mums as Max would be with these kids for the next 6 years at least.

I'm fortunate that I've found a lovely group of mums and all our kids have grouped together to become really good friends in class. We walk to school with some of them and have play dates with others and we are even planning mum's nights out (whether it actually happens we don't know!) but I know it can be tricky to get to that stage so here are some things that I found helpful.

  • Find out who your child plays with - You don't really want to be making friends with a parent if your kids really don't get along as it feels like a forced friendship on them. Having said that it's good to talk to everyone as kids seem to pick and choose friends as fast as they change their socks.
  • Don't hang back - I've seen a few parents hang back in the playground and stand on their phones at the back. It makes them seem a mix of unsociable and as if they don't want to talk to anyone. I found that when I started approaching a couple of the mums it became so much easier to chat each time we turned up at the school gates.
  • Suggest play dates - We started off by mentioning to a few mums back in September that we would be taking Max to play in the park across the road after school one day and they were welcome to join us. We ended up making it a regular thing and until recently when the weather turned it was a great way to sit and chat with a new face.
  •  Find mums on the same school walk as you - We are lucky that we walk to school along a main road. This means that several of his school friends walk the same way. So as the kids walk along together it's given me a chance to talk to the mums and make friends that way.
  • Join the PTA - When Max started school, the first thing my mum said was to join the PTA. It's a great way to get involved with the school, find out what's going on and make friends with other mums. Most of the other parents in the PTA have kids in older years but it's great to chat to people and make new friends.
  • Don't be afraid - At the end of the day you are all there to ensure that your child has a good education. You don't need to show off, be the loudest or even the best you just need to be you. Go there with a smile on your face and catch the eye of someone and you never know what might happen.

Max is 5!

On Tuesday Max turned 5. It's hard to believe that 5 years have flown by this fast. And I'm dreading how fast the next 5 years will go.

We held a birthday party for him on the Sunday before as he's never had a proper party before. We spent a while deliberating where to host it and thought about halls and bouncy castles but in the end settled on a soft play party at Lemur Landings.

Many of you know that we love Lemur Landings. It's a massive soft play centre based at Tower Park in Poole. There's enough there to keep the kids busy for hours with a giant climbing frame, a rock climbing wall, nerf gun area and bits to keep the tiny ones entertained too.

Opting for a soft play party meant that the centre themselves did all the hard work when it came to food, drinks and party bags. All we had to do was turn up with a cake and candles and sit back and enjoy the morning.

I was originally a bit worried as I had no control over anything and had left his first party in the hands of people I didn't know but I had nothing to be worried about and the party went by in the blink of an eye. We even had a visit from Lewey Lemur which the kids absolutely loved.

We had an amazing time and loved the fact that the kids were allowed to stay on the site after the party had ended as they had a bit of energy left in them and wanted to continue playing. We even managed to get some of them up the rock climbing wall which they loved!

Overall I was so impressed with the level of service we received and the value for money that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend a party to any of our friends and family. In fact several of Max's school friends are now booking parties there as we had so much fun!
