Halloween Pumpkin Carving

I can't believe how fast the year has gone, all of a sudden I've looked at the time and November is around the corner. That means it can only be Halloween today!

Halloween is one of my favourite holidays. Mainly because I can get away with wearing all black and being my sarcastic self whilst telling everyone I'm pretending to be Wednesday Addams.

This year we decided we would do some pumpkin carving. I'm a dab hand with a needle and thread, but when it comes to pumpkins I don't know where to begin. Max was adamant that we needed a Disney themed one and whilst Pinterest threw out some amazingly artistic ones I resorted to good old Mickey's face. I took inspiration from this great video I found on the Florida 4 Less site.

Unfortunately things didn't go to plan so I used my back-up idea and cut the silhouette of Mickey's head rather than his facial features. Max seemed over the moon and loved getting mucky when we pulled out all the seeds.

I think we are definitely in the Halloween spirit now, I can't wait to dress up and see what spooky things we have in store at home!

School Update

Max has been at school over a month now and I can hands down say he loves it. When he went to begin with I was worried about him settling down in such a big routine when he can be a bit of a wild child at the best of times. Fortunately he's done a great job and has maintained on the good side of the board (and only landed himself on the bad side once!).

He's made an amazing group of friends. They spend each morning chasing each other in the playground and looking after each other in class. They are all super proud when someone in their group does a good job or gets a certificate. That's not to say he's only got those friends. He seems to mix well with all the kids in his class and the others and has blossomed into a pretty awesome kid.

He's doing exceptionally well in his reading class and is even surprising me at home with some of the stuff he is able to sound out and read to me. I can't wait to introduce him to some of my favourite kids books when he gets a bit bigger!

I'm so glad that he's settled so well. Any panic I had has been eased completely with the wonderful friends he has made (and their parents who are great too!) and the good times he is having. Now to stop him pestering me to go back to school during the holidays!

Harvester Whiteley Review

We love a good meal out. I love the fact I don't have to cook, Scott loves the fact is something other than my cooking and Max loves being out of the house. Last weekend Scott was away in London and I was down in Portsmouth with Max and the In-Laws. So when we were invited to try the new menu over at the Harvester in Whiteley we jumped at the chance.

Harvester is one of those chains that is so loved in England that I'm pretty sure everyone has eaten at one. We are big fans as there is such a great variety on their menu, not to mention the fact their menu has been updated and revamped too. Rosie, Scott's sister joined me, Max and Sandi (my mother in law) as she was eager to see what had changed since she left the company a year ago.

When we got there we couldn't believe how different it looked, what once was a bit dark and dingy was now light, bright and so welcoming that we settled in right away. That's not to say that things had changed completely. Of course there was the well loved Salad Bar with some gorgeous additions (the cous-cous is a must!) but also a new bread bar and sauce bar so you could mix things up to your hearts content.

For kids that need a bit of distraction, there was an amazing colouring sheet that kept Max amused for most of the meal (when he wasn't eating) and the adults definitely got involved too.

In terms of the kid's food, nothing much has changed for the younger menu. Max loves trying new things and I was a bit disappointed that there was still the trusty chicken nuggets on the menu when the older kids had a choice of things like wraps and burgers. That's not to say he didn't love his food and he wolfed it down along with some chips he stole off Rosie's plate! The portion size was perfect, especially as he had wolfed down a lot of salad!

All of us grown ups went for something that was new on the menu. Sandi went for the half a rotisserie chicken and said the meat was delicious and the glaze was amazing. I love the way that it was presented as it really gave an authentic feel to it.

Rosie went for the bbq pulled pork beef burger. They changed it up and added battered onion petals rather than onion rings which made it feel like the Harvester really wanted to make themselves stand out. It was gorgeous or so I've been told (I wasn't allowed to sample a bit).

I went for the bbq chicken stack. I loved the presentation and when I mixed it with the spiked bbq sauce from the sauce bar it was perfection! It filled me up and the skin on fries were a great twist on the regular fries.

The waiting staff were really welcoming and friendly. They went out of their way to make sure we had a great meal and took time to talk to Max rather than ask us what he wanted. This is something that makes all the difference as Max loves to chat to anyone and he's at the age where he's confident enough to know what he wants. They were really helpful with making sure our table was cleared and we were satisfied with drinks and food.

FInally though we had to indulge in desserts. You can't go to the Harvester without having one of their sundaes. So we had two! They have added mini sized sundaes to the kids menu which is perfect for little tummies like Max's. Though I do think his eyes were bigger than his belly when he proclaimed he wanted to eat both sundaes! Max opted for a rocky horror sundae which is filled with fudge pieces and chocolate sauce. Everyone's favourite.

Sandi and Rosie shared the honeycomb explosion, which was definitely a big thumbs up as I hardly heard a peep from the both of them whilst they scoffed it. I went for the cheesecake which was indulgent, creamy and had a gorgeous raspberry coulis on the side to compliment. Of course I ate it before I could take a photo but rest assured it was amazing.

Harvester is one of those classic brands that is continually doing things right and ticking all the boxes to please customers. With such an amazing choice on their menu I can't wait to take the family back to try something else. Thank you Harvester for inviting us, we will be back!

Thomas & Friends: The Christmas Engines Review

Thomas & Friends is a favourite brand in our house. It's one that we all love to sit down and watch together and one that continues to appeal to homes around the whole country too. When we found out that there was going to be a Thomas & Friends Christmas DVD of course we couldn't say no to a review.

Thomas & Friends: The Christmas Engines is a compilation of 5 Christmas themed tales that feature our favourite blue engine and his friends getting up to various escapades and making sure Christmas runs smoothly on the Isle of Sodor. Each episode is broken up by awesome intervals that include a quiz by the Earl and postcards. This makes it seem like it's a movie rather than a series of episodes.

We settled down with a mug of hot chocolate and marshmallows, popped on our fairy lights to get in the festive spirit and popped on the DVD. Max absolutely loved it, roaring with laughter and shouting for them to hurry up before Santa arrives! It's definitely a great Christmas pick me up DVD that would be perfect for a stocking filler or Christmas eve box.

Thomas & Friends: The Christmas Engines is released on the 26th October and at under £10 it's a great price too!

What I've Read on Blloon Recently.

As most of you know, I always have a book in my hands. But recently I've been embracing the e-reading bug and am still obsessed with the Blloon app. Here's what I've finished reading on there over the past couple of months.

  • We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves - I didn't know what to expect of this Booker nominated story. I'm not normally one to read big awards books or even adult fiction. This story whilst being comedic and fun at times left me really confused with some of the language. It's about the relationship between humans and animals and whilst I loved the idea of it I really couldn't attach myself to the character and sympathise with her woes.
  • The Savages - The Savages are a family of cannibals. But when there's a death at the family home, investigators want to know why this family love food so much. The book is almost an insight of carnivores vs vegetarians and the moral ground of both of them. Add that to a dysfunctional family that remind me a bit of the Addams family and I know it's a winner. I read this in one day and even snuck into the bathroom to get a few moments peace to finish it!
  • Girl, Stolen - I loved that this book went straight into the action. Cheyenne is a blind sixteen year old who is kidnapped when someone steals her mums car. What happens next is a split narrative of the captive and the captor that will keep you hooked. I loved this story and couldn't wait to read it and find out what happened next. Highly recommended.
  • How To Be Bad - E. Lockhart is one of my favourite teen authors at the moment. Her books are full of drama and suspense and keep me reading. Which is always a great sign when you see the amount I read. This one was a bit different, a collaboration with a great road trip story. It's enough of a light read to take on holiday but also enough of a dark read to keep you gripped.
What have you been reading recently?

Pop In A Box Subscription Box

Everyone loves a subscription box. There's ones for everything from beauty to beer and everything in between. Me and Scott love to embrace our inner geek and for the past few years have been collecting the ever popular Funko Pop! Vinyl Figures. Now to add to the amazing list of sub boxes is Pop In A Box, your one stop pop mystery box.

Funko Pop! Vinyls are adorable vinyl figures that stand about 3-4" high. There are many different figures ranging from popular film characters through to TV and book series. Pop! Vinyls have increasingly grown in popularity and whilst they are marketed as adult toys, Max loves to play with them as they are sturdy and look cute!

Pop In A Box is the first pop dedicated mystery box. You log onto their site, pick your sub size (1-12 pops) and then spend a while giving each pop a thumbs up or down. This is vital as the way their algorithms work mean that you only receive something that you thumbs up. The more you thumbs up the greater chances you end up getting something you want.

Pop In A Box pride themselves on giving away great deals such as exclusives, rare pops and exclusive discounts in their online store. At £8.49 plus P&P you know you are guaranteed to get a great surprise on your doorstep.

I was sent a 1 pop mystery box so spent a few hours ticking off what we had, what we wanted and what we didn't want. I tried to be open and selected things I knew that Scott and Max would want too. It arrived via Yodel really fast and was packaged extremely well which was really pleasing as I love to see consideration for packing, especially when some pops hold serious value.

Upon opening the box I was so pleased to find that I was a lucky one to be given an exclusive. We received the 6" Nurse Baymax from the film Big Hero 6. This is an exclusive as normally oversized pop figures are more than standard sized ones. We are so excited to have received this and have stashed it away for Max's birthday as it's on his wishlist!

Pop In A Box is an awesome subscription service. One that I can see us taking up ourselves to boost our collection. It's a perfect mystery box for a one off gift or to increase your collection each month. They have an amazing tracker service that lets you see what you have and build your collection on their website.

Thank you to Pop In A Box for letting us review their subscription service. I have a 5% discount code for anyone that buys through my link which is great for new customers wanting to kickstart a collection. I don't receive financial rewards for this but will eventually get a free pop myself.

Maternity Leave - My Experience

Maternity leave can be an amazing time for a woman. A time to bond and really grow as a mother. I treasured my time with Max, yes I struggled with PND but those few months together are priceless.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission have recently done a study about maternity leave and the problems some women have faced in the workplace so I thought I would share my experience with you all.

I found out I was pregnant quite late in term (6 months) so I had to rush through appointments, checks and arrange maternity leave almost instantly. In that time I found my employer to be fairly hostile. They were a well known sales company that had a high turnover of staff and didn't seem to favour females too well. I was told under no circumstances that I was allowed appointments during work hours and I had to stay on my feet all shift and only sit down for short bursts. Considering I was there until 38 weeks I'm surprised I managed it.

Once on maternity leave, I had no contact from my store. They never offered keep in touch days and became very reserved as it neared my return to work. Upon having a meeting to return I was told I was a liability for having a child, I should stay at home and look after him like all women should and they weren't willing to be flexible at all for me. I got sent to a store I had never worked in and my anxiety and depression started up again.

Legally I had to stay employed by the company for 1 month after returning from maternity leave or risk paying back all the company paid maternity pay. I couldn't afford to do this, so after two weeks of working in a place full of hearsay and negativity I went to my doctor. He signed me off for the remainder of the month and I handed in my notice. I didn't care about the potentially bad reference. I just wanted out.

Luckily I managed to pick up a new job in a company that is understanding and flexible with any issue I might have. I have compassionate colleagues who treat me with respect. But some women don't get this option and it takes them a long time to come back from such a negative workplace experience.

  • The EHRC found that 1 in 9 mums were unfairly dismissed or made to feel like they should quit their job. As one of those I can tell you how demoralising it is to feel that being a parent should in any way affect your ability to work a job.
  • 1 in 5 women experienced harassment or negativity from employers or colleagues over flexible working. My employer wouldn't even entertain the idea of flexible working even though as soon as I left they advertised for a role in those hours.
  • 10% were encouraged not to attend antenatal appointments if they clashed with work hours. This is appalling as these appointments are vital and important to ensuring the health and safety of mother and child.
  • 1 in 7 were not given suitable workloads or work and as a result were treated unfairly in the workplace. This means that they not only put themselves at risk, they also could put their child at risk by not being able to take care of themselves.
My employer, along with several others treated me unfairly. And this isn't a lone case with the facts above proving that more needs to be done to show fairness for women in the workplace. Having a child doesn't limit someone from what they can achieve.

Moreish Bakes - Treats In The Post

I love it when treats arrive in the post. But the best kind of treats in the post are most certainly food items. That's where Moreish Bakes come in. A company that will actually send you or anyone else you know some delicious treats in the post!

Moreish Bakes was made out of a love of baking and wanting to surprise people with gorgeous scrummy treats. They haven't fully launched yet but we were sent a trial package of their brownies to see how good they really were.

When they arrived they were in a similar sized box to the Graze box, which fit perfectly into our letterbox. In a plain brown box you would never have guessed the delight that there was inside!

Once opened there was a generously sized parcel in tissue paper (which let's face it is perfectly Instagrammable!) and beyond that the brownie slices were wrapped in cellophane and cut into perfect finger slices for a quick treat.

We had a mix of triple chocolate which was to die for and one mixed with chopped nuts which Scott and Max wolfed down without even thinking. Let's be honest, the brownies didn't last more than half an hour but they were a perfect pick me up on a day where the weather was rotten and we just wanted a treat.

Priced at under £10, this postable box is perfect to surprise a friend with or just indulge yourself with. Thier delivery is 2-3 days but the brownies would keep for even longer (if they don't get eaten by then!)

Chaos

So right now I'm sat here with a stinking cold and a messy house. I honestly don't know where to begin with the housework and would rather curl up in a ball and hibernate. I've got half done posts and projects up to my eyeballs but can't seem to get the motivation to do them at all.

Me and Max had a really good weekend. We spent it just laughing, cuddling, reading and being creative. We made his friends Halloween cards and made cookies to decorate (that we ate before we could hand out!)

My blog seems to have taken a nosedive and been neglected something chronic but with so much going on at home it's hard to find the time. Me and Scott are trying to spend a bit more time together in the evenings as we both felt a bit neglected.

I Interviewed Martina Cole

As many of you know, I am part of the Young Women's Trust Advisory Panel. Basically I am one of 30 young women who come together and help shape the charity's work by sharing my experiences of being a young woman. All the women have different things to bring to the table and it's amazing to see how we all share the same beliefs and values when it comes to young women's rights.

Each year the YWT hold a Future's Fund event, this is to help raise awareness of young women that are facing poverty, lack of education or employment. This year I was invited to interview the amazing Martina Cole on stage about her struggles when she was a young woman.

If you don't know, Martina had her first child at 19 and by 21 both her parents had passed away. She was a single mum working multiple jobs whilst trying to build a future for her and her son. She had written a novel but tucked it away for nearly 10 years when she finally plucked up the courage to send it out to publishers. And now she's a bestselling author with a tv/film production company and a record company.

Martina was such an inspiring woman to talk to. I was a ball of nerves when I met her but she set my mind at ease and the conversation flowed so easily that it felt like we were just having a natter over drinks.

I left the event feeling so positive about my future. The novel that's been sat on my desktop has been dusted off and there is a new found strength that she gave me to know that I can achieve my dreams and that being a woman won't ever hold me back.

An Unexpected Week Off

The past week has somehow resulted in an unexpected week off blogging. I never intended to do it, I just made a decision each morning to focus on myself a bit more than normal. In a normal week I tend to wake up and do the school run with Max. When I'm back I clean, blog, cook and run all the other errands in my other jobs before I head off to my paid job! No matter how much of a ruthless schedule I run to I need to take a break once in awhile, veg out on the sofa with a good book or do something with some friends.

Last week was a bit special though, I ended up doing something wonderful for the Young Women's Trust which will be up on their site sometime this week (when I've finished writing it for them). It left me as a bag of nerves to begin with and by the end of the week I was bursting with pride!

Max is settled in at school but I'm still finding it a bit of a struggle at times to connect with the other mums. Being a young mum I'm always used to people judging me and to find a few mums that aren't like that is a bit of a shock to the system. Max is having a whale of a time though. He's always grumpy when Friday rolls around,

Thomas & Friends Trackmaster Shipwreck Rails Review

I think it's almost a rite of passage that all kids have a toy train set at some point in their lives. Max absolutely adored his wooden figure of eight one when he was little and when he outgrew it I was secretly bummed as there's nothing more relaxing than watching a train go around a track. So when Fisher Price asked if we wanted to review the Thomas & Friends Trackmaster Shipwreck Rails Set we definitely couldn't turn it down.

Even at nearly 5, Max is still a huge fan of Thomas & Friends. Whenever we head to Butlins, the Thomas show is always at the top of our schedule and we love snuggling up on the sofa watching episodes of Thomas and singing along to the theme tune (I bet you have it in your head now!).

One thing I must point out about this train set is that it's pretty big, it comes with a muddy Thomas (needs 2xAA batteries), 21 track pieces, 13 track accessories and an instruction booklet to help you put it together. I was so surprised at how easy it was to slot in place, each piece has the piece number printed on the back of it so you know that you are attaching everything together correctly, not only that but the instructions are so clear that even Scott could put them together!

Once assembled, the track sits at 1.6m long so you need a clear amount of room. This was no problem as we set it up in Max's room and he was occupied for hours! Once setup you merely have to turn Thomas on and watch him trundle around the tracks until he reaches the wreck. This is the fun bit! He does a 360 degree spin all the way down to the bottom and then it's time for him to make his way around again.

It was such a simple concept but one that kept him (and me) amused for ages. We made up stories and watched Thomas puff along the track for ages. It has an auto reset function which means that it will continue to go around the track until you stop it to. We absolutely adore this toy and Max has had loads of friends over to enjoy it too meaning it's definitely worth the £42.99 price label.

It also works with the other TrackMasters series so if you have any of the other sets then the trains can work on the tracks meaning you could easily fit another train on this set for even more fun and games.

I've attached a little Instagram Video of us playing on it so you can see how much fun it really is!

The TePe Challenge

Oral hygiene is a key part of our daily routine. As a family we all brush our teeth together each morning and night. We've made up songs to help encourage Max to grow up with a good dental routine. Our teeth might not be the best, I have a few fillings and Scott has some crooked teeth but we've told Max that as long as he brushes each day then his oral hygiene will be at it's best.

We were challenged by TePe to try and increase and better our oral hygiene over two weeks. TePe want to help families realise that there is more than just toothbrushes and mouthwash to keep on top of your pearly whites.

The Brushes: We were sent three brushes. Two TePe select brushes and one TePe mini for Max. I normally have to side with really soft bristled brushes as I've found normal brushes irritate my gums. Whilst these aren't soft bristled they were really hard wearing and felt like they gave a really good clean. They weren't irritating and Max did a great job brushing as the mini brush had smaller bristles and a great brush head.

The Interdental Brushes: When normal brushing isn't enough, the Interdental Brushes are time to take the stand. These small, plastic coated wire brushes are great for getting into the hard to reach places. I have a couple of teeth that could have been straightened with braces but they never bothered me. Using the Plaqsearch made me realise how they don't get cleaned as well as I thought so I spent more time using these small brushes to work on the hard to reach areas

The PlaqSearch: These scared the hell out of me. Not because they look horrible but because I knew I would be horrified at what I saw. PlaqSearch is a small tablet that is a great way of showing how well you actually brush. Once chewed it shows the new and old plaque on your teeth. Blue is for plaque over 12 hours old and red is for new plaque. Fortunately we didn't have as much blue plaque as what we thought we would but it was still shocking to see how our brushing technique isn't as good as what we thought.

After two weeks we were amazed at how a few simple changes to our routine could really improve our oral health. As we all know, we only have one set of adult teeth so it's good to take care of them to the best of our ability.

We are now taking steps to make sure that our hygiene is tip top by taking on board tips such as cutting back on sugar and salt, spitting instead of rinsing and making sure we brush for the full two minutes.

Note: We were sent products for a hygiene challenge.
