Growing Up

Every once in a while I take a step back from the hustle and bustle to take in what's around me. In less than a month we find out where Max is going to be attending school. To say I'm daunted is an understatement. I'm terrified of the prospect of my little baby putting on a uniform and going to school. I don't know why I am when he's been in some form of childcare since he was 9 months old. But school, gosh it makes me feel like we've all grown up.

I can't believe that the small boy that was once a baby I cuddled and stared at adoringly is this energetic child that wants to run about and sing at the top of his lungs. The child that I swaddled in blankets to put to sleep is now the same one that I sit next to in bed whilst he clings onto his favourite teddy.

Grow up sweet boy, one day you will learn how to fly and will soar above everyone with all your wonders in the world. Until then please don't grow to fast.

Friday Reads: Blown Away - Rob Biddulph

Many of you have been following my reviews of the shortlist for the Waterstones Children's Book Prize and last night was the very grand award ceremony. The overall winner of the awards was the gorgeous picture book "Blown Away" by Rob Biddulph.
Blue is a penguin who has a new kite, he decides that one windy day he should take it on a maiden flight. Unfortunately things go a bit wrong and he ends up flying across the land and sea, picking up friends on the way, until he ends up in the jungle. Of course the jungle is no place for a penguin so how can they get home?

This book is an amazing rhyming tale, one the kids will love that cover everything from counting to animals and places. Not to mention the GORGEOUS illustrations. Seriously I want to cover my walls in this gorgeous book (is that allowed? haha) as the pictures are so wonderful.

I'm so pleased that this was picked to win the overall prize, it's one that we have been loving since the day it dropped in my lap about 6 months ago. Congratulations Rob! Can't wait for book 2.

Moors Valley Country Park

We love a good day out in the forest. Nothing beats grabbing some snacks, a drink and the camera and heading out for some fun and exploring. One of our favourite places is Moors Valley Country Park. Set just outside Dorset and Hampshire and just off the motorway, this park is full of everything from activities, to cycle paths, play trails and Go Ape the treetop course.

The best thing about Moors Valley? It's free. All you pay for is the car park which normally ranges from £1.80 up to about £7 depending on how long you decide to stay for! As you can see below we love it, Max can truly be the king of all the wild things and we get a breath of fresh air to brighten our day.

Beanies Flavoured Coffee Review

I think a rite of passage for any parent is that moment you realise coffee or anything else caffeine based is your lifeline. I can definitely vouch for this family when we say that Scott can't function in the morning without a cup of the good stuff. That's why when we were offered some Beanies flavoured coffee to review he didn't need to be asked twice! So from here on the post is his, hope you enjoy it.

For those of you who are loyal fans of Maxandmummy blog, you will remember me as the writer of the FriDad posts that I abandoned like an old piece of gum whilst running towards the playground of…well, anonymity. If you’re unfamiliar with me, I’m the less busy half of the relationship.

To make you aware, I'm a coffee person. Every day is started almost definitely with coffee. I’m not a coffee snob, I enjoy my coffee, but I won't wait for my brew. I never get to enjoy great quality coffee, so when I was dropped this box of coffee on my lap by Laura (not a coffee drinker).

First impressions, I couldn't wait to give these flavours: Vanilla, Chocolate, Hazelnut and Amaretto. The package is simple, so I appreciated the surprised I would come across when eventually trying these instant coffees.

Hazelnut: Now. Here is where I tell you something that is true…no lies. This is one of the best flavours I’ve ever had of a coffee. This flavour made a strong resemblance to hazelnut, but blended with the coffee gives an experience that snuggles the taste buds and kicks in the endorphins. I highly recommend you give this one a go, it’s nearly too good to share, but spread the word it’s fantastic.

Vanilla: Maybe the most mellow of the flavours. It gently hits the palate and isn’t strong. I’d say this goes well for someone who isn’t a strong coffee lover. I always drink my coffee with milk and two sugars (coffee keyboard warriors brace yourselves) so I don’t replicate the barista experience. However, I have had a great coffee using vanilla syrup. It wasn’t my favourite, but it was calming. I actually relaxed and perked for my day.

Amaretto: I had a good chance to laugh with my mum saying that an alcoholic will enjoy this flavour no doubt. I’m not a fan of Amaretto, so I only have a biased opinion of the flavour. So, what did I do to get a good opinion? I gave my mum a cup on her visit. Her verdict remains to be that it is similar to amaretto alcohol, no resemblance to alcohol, nor coffee shop. This coffee was confirmed as a pleasurable jar based coffee.

Chocolate: This one is quite surprising. It may be the better seller of the group for this reason, it almost acts as a mocha. The texture of the coffee isn’t different, nor is the consistency thicker. It is much like an Americano from a coffee shop; however the flavour is richer and stronger on the chocolate side. I enjoyed it, not really because it’s chocolate, but because it’s so similar to a mocha experience.

In conclusion, I think this company got it very right. It’s not designed to act like a coffee shop coffee, so don’t expect that. However, this brand knows exactly how to blend the flavours into coffee to give a unique experience that would make any coffee drinker joyful and only two calories a cup. A brilliant coffee with a difference.

Lyngo Puss In Boots Lighthouse Poole Review

Would you ever trust a cat? What about a cat that talks? Many of you know the tale of Puss In Boots. A cat that helps his master become rich beyond his wildest dreams. But none of you have seen it performed the way we did.

We were kindly given some tickets to attend the show of Puss In Boots at the Lighthouse Poole performed by Lyngo Theatre.

Lyngo Theatre are a small production company that draw upon English and Italian connections to create highly visual and creative shows based on fables for children.

The idea of having one sloping stage, one actor and a massive story to tell can be daunting for anyone but Patrick Lynch does an amazing job of telling the tale and adapting to many characters that all the kids, especially Max were squealing with glee. The way he worked with the cat puppet was amazing. Max was totally convinced there was a real cat on stage.

Using smoke, mirrors and hidden panels Lynch manages to transform the stage into everything from a pond for fishing to an oven to cook bread in. He opened the show by covering himself in flour, something you don't expect to see at any old show. There were even a host of fruit and vegetables being thrown on stage to entertain the children, bring an atmosphere and beat to the show.

The play stands at 50 minutes, so perfect time for a child to be captivated without getting bored and I can definitely vouch for the fact that these kids in the audience were hooked.

The Lighthouse was the perfect setting for this, they have a small studio that meant that we felt so close to the action and were sat in a way that even the smallest of people could watch what is going on during the show.

Thanks Lighthouse for letting us see this wonderful show! Be sure to check out their site for more family friendly events and Lyngo Theatre's for the rest of the Puss In Boots tour dates.

Top 5 YA Debut's of 2015

If you haven't worked out by now, YA is my favourite thing to read. Yes at 24 I still read books aimed at teens. Mainly because I find the stories interesting, groundbreaking and a lot more fun to read than some of the stuff in "adult" fiction. You find that YA authors are pushing the boundaries to try and do more, discuss topics others won't and help people on a journey through life.

There is an amazing amount of YA debut novels coming out. But I had to be ruthless. I needed to pick just 5 books that are coming out this year that will blow you away.

7 Days - Eve Ainsworth
7 Days, 2 victims, 1 bully. This amazingly insightful book about bullying takes you into the mind of both the bully and the victim. For Jess, school is a safe haven away from her disruptive home, but life isn't made easy by the wonderfully perfect Kez and her gang. But surely Kez's life isn't all it's chalked up to be either. A nail biting, heartwarming story that will have you cheering and crying right until the last page.

Simon Vs The Homo Sapians Agenda - Becky Albertalli
Simon is 16 and is trying to work out who he is. When an email about his sexuality lands in the hands of the wrong person things don't look so great. Especially when he's just opened up to the world that he has feelings for Blue (you don't find out who Blue is until the end!). The book talks a lot about the sexual norm and why being gay isn't the weird thing. What if straight people had to come out to the world too?

My Heart and Other Black Holes - Jasmine Warga
Two teens make a suicide pact. Not because they are scared but because they know they can't do it alone. One is a smart, physics nerd called Aysel and the other is Roman who is dealing with a family tragedy of his own. It seems weird to read a book about motivational coaches in suicide, but this is something that does happen and it's amazing to get in the head of both characters. At the end of the day it is only them that can control their own fate. A gut wrenching book that will have you bawling through it.

Weightless - Sarah Bannan
Okay, I am cheating slightly. This will be filed under fiction. But the book is about teens and it read like a decent YA book to me so I'm putting it in there! A new girl turns up at school, she hits right up to the top of the school's hotlist. Except no-one knows anything about her, her social media is barren and until a tv crew shows up people are still in the dark. An amazing eye opener into cyber bullying and bullying in general. One that will resonate amongst young people.

Drop - Katie Everson
Carla wasn't always a junkie, it wasn't as if she set herself up to be one, it just happened. But she isn't one of those wreck heads that steals and sleeps on the street. She's different. But when she starts a school and meets the resident bad boy she gets swept off her feet and really isn't the normal good girl she thought she was. This book isn't out until August (not even the artwork has been released) but my god this blew me away!

So thats 5 of my top debuts. What books are you looking forward to?

Wednesday Wishlist: Blogging Wishlist

I love blogging, we have a great little corner in our flat with a disk that I can scurry and write away at. Having said that, A girl can dream about making her blogging space that little bit better right?

  • Apple Macbook Pro - My Mac is dying a slow and painful death. It's about 6/7 years old now and unfortunately suffered a massive crack down the bottom of it (oops!)
  • Olympus Pen Camera - Having my DSLR all the time isn't the best. It's heavy, I have loads of lenses and a bit of a pain to capture quick shots for the blog. This is perfect. As small as a compact but as good as a DSLR
  • Notes Pegs - I'm forever losing important information, this is a great way to keep on top of it all.
  • Grey Peg Board - I love how adaptable this board is, I can make it for paperwork, important things and anything else that looks pretty!
  • Grown Ups Poster - I love this poster. It reminds me that life doesn't need to be boring.
  • Pilot V Signpen - I am a bit of a pen snob. Once I find a pen I love I will buy it for as long as I can get hold of it. When I got this pen I was amazed how easy it was to write with and how thick and bold my writing was.
  • Triangle Dotted Notebook - A perfect notebook for keeping at my desk so that I can jot down any ideas and sketch and shoot plans
  • Moleskine Notebook - Okay I am addicted to Moleskines. Like pens, when I find a brand I love I normally stick to them. This is perfect and hardwearing enough to throw in my bag and scurry any post ideas down on the go.

Being a kid is tough.

Look at you my sweet little boy, I know you think that life is tough for you. That when I say no to sweets it's the end of the world and when you want to stay up late you think you are missing things. But Max my child, you aren't missing fun things, merely washing and tidying. Mum and Dad working out the plan of action for the next day. A day of learning, fun and new experiences.

You are so little yet so big, a child that has grown in front of our eyes from a baby to a boy in the blink of an eye. Our nights of co-sleeping and night feeds have turned into morning cuddles and night time songs.

You are grasping your own ideas on the big wide world, learning about right and wrong and forgiving and loving. Learning how people can look different but we all have the same heart. That best friends are ones you hold close and you know you can count on your family to be there when you've grazed your knee.

You have so much love in that heart of yours that is about to burst, you want to embrace and love everyone and everything you meet. You are full of questions and want to know why things happen and how things work. That brain is constantly whirring on overdrive trying to cram in all of the things you hear around you.

Being a kid is tough. You don't know why things happen and why you have to do things you might not necessarily want to do. Things can seem overwhelming for you but you have your loved ones there to help guide you. It might be tough, but kid you are one tough cookie.

Waterstones Children's Book Prize: Teen

So for the past couple of weeks my Friday Reads posts have been dedicated to looking at the Waterstones Children's Book Prize shortlist. Finally we are onto the teen category, normally aimed at children 12/13+. But don't let that fool you a lot of these would be great adult reads too!

Smart

If you are a fan of Mark Haddon's "Curious Incident..." book then this is one for you. A homeless man is found dead and no one, not even the police want to find out who did it or what happened. Was it an accident or something far more serious. That's why Keiran decides to find out what happened, after all secrets can't stay secret forever. This is a lovely tale about a boy growing up and finding his place in the world. It looks at topics such as bullying and compassion.

Dead Ends

The story of Dane and Billy. One is a notorious bully and the other has Downs Syndrome. What starts as a forced connection turns into a great story of boys trying to understand their own family dynamics whilst forging an unexpected friendship. It was a great insight into the mentality of a bully and a victim. Except you don't really know who's who. I really enjoyed this book, Erin has a distinct style of writing that means I can devour books pretty fast!

The Strange And Beautiful Sorrows Of Ava Lavender

Magic runs through Ava's family, so when she is born with soft feather wings her family want to keep her safe. Except Ava is just like any normal girl and wants to venture out and see the world. But how will the other people see her? This book is a great blend of magic, mythology and escapism with some beautifully written text. It doesn't seem like your typical YA book but one that definitely should be read.

The Apple Tart Of Hope

This is one that I have already reviewed (see Here) but to give it another synopsis. Oscar is gone, presumed dead, but his brother and best friend think otherwise. It's a tale of two friends trying to find out what's happened, understand mental health and grieving. There is a real evil character running through it, but you always remember that an apple pie can make things better, even just for a moment.

Half Bad

A council of white witches has Nathan under lock and key, they are scared of him as his father is the darkest black witch there is. Nathan must escape before his 17th birthday otherwise he will die, there is a gift he must receive before then. A wonderful spin on the idea of witches that is really refreshing to read. I've already read Half Wild (the sequel) and that is fantastic!

Only Ever Yours

Set in a dystopian world where beauty is all that matters, you meet Freida and Isabel, two girls forged together through their impending fate. Will they end up as wives for the elite males, or living life as a concubine. A dark, intense story that will stay with you forever. Looking at female objectification, social media and the challenges of living up to the media expectations. Think The Handmaids Tale meets Mean Girls. You don't want to miss reading this.

World Book Day

It's World Book Day today, the celebration of children's literature and all things book related. Most kids will be going to school today, dressed as their favourite characters and embracing the world of books. These kids will also be given the wonderful £1 voucher. This gives them the chance to go to their local bookshop and trade it in for a wonderful WBD book or money off a book of their choice.

Not only that but WBD are hosting the Biggest Book Show On Earth. A wealth of virtual workshops for classrooms, kids and adults to enjoy and learn how to create their own stories and tales.

This year I have put my sewing kit away and embraced the bought costume. We've had a hectic year so when we were offered a costume from the range at George At Asda we jumped at the opportunity. Max is starting to love Where's Wally and hide and seek books so this seemed like the best option for us and let's just say he looks mighty cute! He's been wearing the costume almost every day since we got it earlier in the week and its been such hard wearing for a fancy dress outfit that we are definitely going to grab more for our dressing up box!

Bournemouth Oceanarium

Ever since Max was little we have always had an annual pass for a local attraction. For many years it was the Oceanarium, but we took a change last year. This year we decided to return to our roots and head back for another annual pass.

There is something magical about watching Max around the fish. Once he races around at top speed he takes time to sit and watch them, almost hypnotically, bringing a sense of calm over him that we don't see many other places.

He's constantly asking questions about the fish, sharks and turtles with fascination and it's a great hands on way for him to learn about the environment with interactive features. There's some great hands on things to do and learn for the kids and they are in the process of adding a penguin enclosure this summer meaning that the place will be even more exciting!

The best thing about the Oceanarium is that you can return at any point in the day to watch all the different feeding sessions meaning that your money spent is well worth it. If you haven't caught the otters being fed then it's definitely recommended. We love the Oceanarium and can't wait to spend the rest of the year visiting.

Aztec Wigwam Play Tent Review

With spring hopefully around the corner and the weather starting to pick up (I use my words wisely, I don't want to jinx it!) we thought what better time than now to review some outdoor, and indoor fun.

We are a pretty outdoorsy family and love a good festival so when we were asked to review the Aztec Wigwam Play Tent from Big Game Hunters we jumped at the chance! A tent that we could use indoors and out and have fun with for years, who doesn't love the sound of that!

The great thing about the site is that the product is sent via secure post meaning you can track it and work out exactly when it's going to arrive. We didn't tell Max that it was going to be arriving and left it as a surprise for the moment we unpacked it. I was really surprised to find that it came in quite a small box, about up to my waist and neatly packed.

We took the tent round to my aunt's house. They have a massive garden and we are normally there a lot so know that it was the best place to show Max what he had been sent. I was also unsure of how big it was and where we would fit it in our flat once we got home.

The instructions were really clear and concise, they showed me where everything went and I didn't get confused once! And I have to admit that instructions can beat me at the best of times. We found that it took about 2/3 people to put it together as you had to support it whilst tying things but once it's built you just have to pull all the poles together. It's got a diameter of a meter and a half, quite large so perfect for fitting a few kids in!

Once built though this gorgeous tent is sturdy and supportive. You don't need anything to weigh it down as the poles sit in the pockets of the canvas. The great design is bright and attractive and is infact made with a waterproof coating so it can be used outdoors without worrying about a small bit of rain damaging it!

The ground was a bit wet so we threw a sheet down and Max spent a good 3/4 hours running about, playing with his toys and loving his tent. It's something I can imagine taking down to the park for an afternoon of fun in the sun with his friends as it's fairly easy to pack away and transport.

When we took the tent home we put it back up in our lounge, it's a bit of a squeeze but perfect for a lazy movie day as we threw loads of cushions and blankets inside and popped on a great film. Of course Max had to give me an impromptu performance to prepare for all the festivals he's going to perform at!

We love this tent, it's gorgeous design, long lasting, durable and affordable. Priced at £59.99 you know it's something that is going to last and be played with forever. The only thing that I don't like? It's not made in an adult size!

Silent Sunday
